Great new book from Larry Correira! I'm excited to see where this series goes. Quite an enveloping world of swordplay and danger. This book offers an excellent background into whatever may come in further books. It has just the right combination of history, lore, society view from high born to low born, and origins of the demons and the right against them. It also is jam packed with action, and focuses on a main character with implacable views and loyalty, who watches everything crumble about him in the name of politics. Larry Correira has a unique writing style that let's the reader in on the secrets of the plots surrounding his characters, yet only when the character has developed himself enough, is he let in on the secret too. That's a gift, wherein most novels become predictable, but not this one!

I don't normally review books I've read on Amazon -- why gild the lily, and add to what others have already done far better than I could? But given the relatively few reviews for this so far, I figured that I'd chime in for a change.I've enjoyed Larry Correia's other series (Grimnoir and MHI), which were entertaining and well-written (if nothing incredibly deep and a bit on the "pulpy" side but very enjoyably so), so I decided to give this a try. I'm quite glad that I did.This is unequivically Larry Correia's best work yet. While the prose in his prior series can be workman-like at times (and the focus on some of the details of action sequences can detract slightly from the narrative), the quality of writing here is a clear improvement beyond the solid efforts of Larry's previous series. The characterization is also Larry's best work, with the protagonist significantly more nuanced and complex than in prior series (with the possible exception of Franks in MHI), while still being heroic and sympathetic and acting rationally, given his outlook, knowledge, and constraints. The plotting is extremely well-done and well-paced, and the periodic flashbacks (especially in the early going) were well-placed and of well-tailored length to slake the reader's thirst for backstory and worldbuilding without giving away the whole game or detracting from the overall narrative arc.Overall, the world is close enough to ours to be recognizable and not so different that it and its characters are unrelatable. Their motivations are well-established, and even having read Larry's two other fantasy-ish series, the plot twists and events were not the least bit predictable, other than insofar as characters in novels should act in a manner true to who they are. Side characters are filled in as necessary, again, without giving away too much information or giving us full insight into their plans and motivations for those whose arcs are not resolved in this book. While there are hints as to some of their motivations, particularly for the more minor characters whose arcs are resolved -- the hints provided regarding the "string-pulling" big bad behind the scenes and the "dirty work" big bad implementing things, and the inferences that the reader can draw, are tantalizing, and make me wish that this whole series had already been completed.Continuity is also well-established, as are the laws of unintended consequence -- in several instances, characters are appropriately forced to deal with the results of their earlier choices, both for good and for ill. All-in-all, its a very promising start to the series. Is it Brandon Sanderson's "The Stormlight Archive"? No, it's not -- more focused on action, narrower in scope, less concerned with the overall magic system and worldbuilding. But it's thoughtful, creative, interesting, coherent, consistent, well-paced and well-plotted -- a damn fine fantasy book.My only complaint -- though it's a good problem to have -- is the wait before the next book in the series comes out. Nicely done, Larry -- and keep up the great work!

I came to MHI and the Grimnoir Chronicles late; devoured them all and wanted more - especially the Grimnoir series. When I heard Correia had a new book coming out I was disappointed to find that it was neither series, but the concept looked intriguing, so I bit - and I'm glad I did. I bought the Kindle edition. If there were flaws, they were barely noticeable. Quite happy with the purchase.Wonderful world building. Great plot, believable characters, nasty villains and flawed heroes. Above all, his best writing yet. Considering my last read was the ponderous "Hell's Foundations Quiver" - which I enjoyed (bit of a masochist I guess) - "Son of the Black Sword" was a rippingly good read. I've seen elsewhere that the first third of the book was slow, but compared to Weber's prose it was positively speedy. As always, Correia writes great action sequences, but it was the world building that stood out. Outstanding. I know these things take time, but more and sooner would be much appreciated!4-stars plus. Not perfect but damned good. Highly recommended.

I bought this book before I knew there was not a second or third written yet. I now find myself in a purgatory of expectation and disappointment. The book is FANTASTIC! The characters are much deeper than in his fun pulp monster hunter series. The action is paced well and the plotting, so far, leaves you wanting more. Aside from the plot, the reader will want to know much more about the history behind Ramorwan, the Black Steel, the Heart of the Mountain, the demons, and the untouchables.Mr. Correia has set himself a formidable task in fleshing out this intriguing world, it's history and it's future. I look forward to the next installment with annoyance born of desire to dive into it immediately.

Corriea has created a fascinating new world for this series, and shows off his abilities as a writer. Some authors who have found success with one style are unable to branch out and write anything else. This is not the case here. Son of the Black Sword is quite distinct from both the Monster Hunter and the Grimnoir stories, but equally as good as those series. The world building in particular is excellent. I'm looking forward to what comes next.

Overall, I enjoyed the book, which is written by an author who is more of a Bradbury fan than someone who is coming to Ray Bradbury the man and his material cold. Weller’s does a good job in describing Bradbury’s life in a straight forward and chronological fashion, which is both its strength in terms of ease of readability, but also its weakness with regard to probing the depths of the man. Weller is a fan of Bradbury and they ended up being personal friends as result of the biography. I too am a fan of Bradbury’s books, but not to the point that I’m not aware of his short comings. Upon finishing “The Bradbury Chronicles” one comes away dissatisfied, almost as if the book has whet the appetite with an excellent entre in preparation for an amazing main meal, which then does not appear. The book shares a chronological history, interesting anecdotes and flotsam and jetsam concerning Ray Bradbury, but it doesn’t really get at the heart of what made him tick. You leave the book wanting to know more. Secondly, the biography doesn’t delve deeply enough into Ray’s signature novels – it gives what I feel is a brief overview of his main books such as the Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man and Something Wicked Comes This Way. Weller goes into the preparation of drafts, submissions to publishers and when the books were published, but he doesn’t pull apart plots, characters, motifs or the mechanics of the books, their origins or how they were put together. When he does start to do this the book becomes extremely interesting, but he does so far too infrequently. If you are a writer, you don’t really get much of an insight into Bradbury’s tools and his inner workings in relation to his stories. In terms of a whole vision of the man himself, whilst Weller does cover some of Bradbury’s infidelities, they get only cursory mention, and again whilst you are given many facts and events, you don’t come away with a strong flavour for what Ray Bradbury was really like and what drove him. His books and short stories of course speak volumes of the man himself, but we are given little insight into their gestation, construction and execution. Weller’s biography on Bradbury is good, but it could have been much better.

This is a really interesting read that drives home the point that, even in his most far-out science fiction stories and tales of the fantastic, Bradbury managed to insert elements of his own life experience into the mix. I look forward to re-reading Bradbury's stories and novels with this biography as "background".

Bradbury didn't reveal too much about his life in print.This book he was interviewed, helpful to the author and his story is just as jaw dropping as one of his stories or films! Fans will be amazed!

Ray Weller's biography of Ray Bradbury, the prolific author of such seminal works of sci-fi and fantasy as The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man and Something Wicked This Way Comes, grew out of an article he wrote in observance of Bradbury's 80th birthday year for Chicago Tribune magazine. In a disarming preface Weller recounts his meeting and immediate rapport with the author and his wife, and admits to being an unabashed fan. This is most apparent in Weller's reticence about the author's private life, in particular his longlasting but nevertheless troubled marriage. Nor is he critically evaluative of Bradbury's voluminous output, preferring to leave that to literary scholars. That still leaves a lot of worthwhile writing about a boy who grew up in small-town Illinois in frequent near-poverty and who never went to college. Bradbury's simple tastes and disdain for technology (he refused to fly in an airplane or use a computer for most of his life) seem at odds with his literary visions; neverthess, his gifts, ambition and discipline (for most of his life Bradbury has produced at least one short story every week) have led him to the place he occupies today as one of America's most well-known authors, credited by many other writers as a major influence on their work. The author's story has enough interest on its own that it works best when Weller steps back and simply tells it, particularly his frequently troubled relationships with luminaries in film and television such as John Huston (for whom Bradbury penned his most successful screenplay, "Moby Dick") and Rod Serling, whose "Twilight Zone" series frequently paid homage to, and possibly plagiarized, Bradbury's ideas while rejecting the author's own teleplays. When Weller attempts something more his own writing can be embarassingly naive and gushy: "Ray's speech...was fifteen minutes of love, joy and inspiration. That night, Ray Bradbury jumped off the cliff and built his wings on the way down." Such passages are happily few and far between in this by and large worthwhile book for Bradbury's many admirers.

Excellent bio with a lot of anecdotal stories relating to the short stories (sources, inspiration, etc.).Although the author is obviously a fan and had a friendship with RB, it is very objective. It shouldprompt readers to go back and reread the stories they remember - and read the ones they missed.

I was able to meet Ray Bradbury just before he spoke at C.S.U.N. about 15 years ago. It was a wonderful experience, I wish I would have had more opportunities before he passed away. I'm reading this book to learn more about the person.

I purchased this map for a forthcoming trip through Namibia...Botswana....and on to Victoria Falls. This map does the job nicely. Since the map covers the northern and southern parts of both countries on different sides... it works perfectly for my intended journey since I don't have to continuously turn the map over. And... I was glad they had room to also fit in Victoria Falls and environs.
