Review

"Mr. Diamond...is a lucid writer with an ability to make arcane scientific concepts readiily accesible to the lay reader, and his case studies of failed cultures are never less than compelling." —The New York Times"...Collapse is a magisterial effort packed with insight and written with clarity and enthusiasm." —Businessweek"Guns, Germs, and Steel and Collapse represent one of the most significant projects embarked upon by any intellectual of our generation. They are magnificent books: extraordinary in erudition and originality, compelling in their ability to relate the digitized pandemonium of the present to the hushed agrarian sunrises of the far past. I read both thinking what literature might be like if every author knew so much, wrote so clearly and formed arguments with such care." —Gregg Easterbrook, The New York Times Book Review

Diamond uses a five point model to examine societies that have declined and collapsed and those that have thrived due to change. Examining the Mayan culture, the people of Easter Island and others, Diamond presents a thoughtful anaylsis as to how these very different cultures (one isolated with no enemies but a rich land and culture badly overtaxed the other a rich culture that that had many contacts and enemies to complicate their lives)to present models that we can use today to deal with these issues regarding the environment, social pressure and others that face our culture.Diamond's approach argues that none of these cultures were inferior and that they face the same ecological, environmental and, ultimately, social stressors as we do in our world today. He also takes a look at modern societies (including China and Australia)and how they are faring with the 12 modern types of environmental problems. In another section he looks at the good and bad that big business have contributed to the ecology. It's pretty fair balanced overall.Diamond suggests that societies ultimately choose to fail or succeed based on their problem solving skills, ability to be flexible and change prior to crisis mode. Essentially we can either be victims or lead the charge for change. I didn't feel that an examination of past cultures was a flaw like some reviewers; he examines them in more depth because we already know the outcome and can more clearly trace the evoltionary path that led to their undoing. That path shows up again when examining our modern world and the ways that we are both feeding choas and living with the resources we have as a nation and world. His point about how important it is to understand all of this in a globalized culture seems valid; there are too many interconnected countires now (unlike the Easter Island situation where they were, essentially, isolated and didn't have an impact on other cultures when they finally fell)and if one falls, ultimately, it will have a domino effect on other countries as well putting our world at peril and not just one or two countries.A warning about Diamond's book seems appropriate. It can be read by the lay person but the dense material might be daunting for some people. Skimming the book may give you can idea of the content but it won't have the same profound impact on your view of the world as reading it from cover to cover. I agree with Diamond's viewpoint on a single important point--change and flexibility will help a society thrive and a society that remains static, denies what occurs around it will fail.

"Collapse" is my third Jared Diamond book and, as before, he does not disappoint. Combining Anthropology, History and Geography with Environmental studies of how humans use, and misuse, Natural Resources, Diamond draws interesting insights into past societies and how their fates can relate to our modern world. To support his conclusions Diamond cites the findings and thoughts of many specialists, past and present, as well as his own field research at various locations around the world. With in depth proses "Collapse" gives the reader plenty of food for thought. Starting with his experiences in modern day Montana, Diamond examines the state's issues with logging, mining, soil erosion, water conservation and wildlife, both native and foreign. The insights by local ranchers, miners, loggers, rural and urban people give you an idea on how Montanans feel about government regulations and laws on those issues. Moving on to past societies the author follows the same scenario. In depth histories of such far flung places as Easter Island, Greenland and Iceland, New Guinea and Japan explains how they may have dealt with the same environmental problems that plague us today. I really enjoyed the Easter Island history and how this isolated speck of land moved from a sub-tropical paradise to a barren, treeless island and what role religion may have played in it's story. Up north the Vikings were facing their own problems when they colonized Greenland. At first they did well but conditions slowly deteriorated and when the Inuit returned, the Norse colonist were faced with human competitors as well as environmental challenges. The Anasazi and the Mayans are also looked at, how each society dealt with changing conditions and leaders that failed to address their many problems of population and environment. Changing to modern societies Diamond looks at the Rwandan Genocide, the issues faced by The Dominican Republic and Haiti. China's and Australia's evolving societies and how they are moving into today's world. With all this background Diamond discuses his conclusions and poses questions like; Why do some societies make the wrong decisions? What role do Big Business and the environment play in our future survival? The chapter on Big Business is especially enlightening with segments on Oil and Mining Companies, the Logging and Seafood Industry and how these vital businesses effect our future, for good or ill. Lastly he poses the question of what, if anything, can we learn from past societies's successes and failures. This is a great book, one that covers a lot of issues and gives both sides of the story. Jared Diamond is one of the best writers of science and history. He consistently takes me into new realms of wonder with interesting topics and unique insights. While I experienced no down loading problems with this Kindle edition is did notice a couple of "quality control" issues. Through out the book there were several places where punctuation's were left out and in the chapter on the Vikings in Greenland; the word "fjord" was replaced with "3ord". In neither case was the problem bad enough so that I couldn't follow the text, nonetheless it showed a certain lack of that quality control by the publisher. Regardless, this is a book well worth reading and I'm glad to have it on my Kindle.Last Ranger

Why did ancient civilizations (Anasazi, Easter Island, Maya, the Norse colonies on Greenland and North America, and others) fail? Why was Iceland nearly denuded of vegetation? Why does it appear that the Bitterroot Valley in Montana, USA, is "in trouble"? Diamond presents descriptions and explanations in the framework of science and reason, applying archaeology, anthropology, palynology, and other sciences including dating by tree rings and carbon decay. In some cases (Iceland) factors unknown to settlers were largely instrumental. In some cases, it appears that bad decisions by leaders and the population, itself, were instrumental. What lessons can we learn? If you are younger than 20 or have children or grandchildren, you owe it to yourself or them to read and understand this book.

I think the conclusions were oversimplified and dissenting opinions were not mentioned. I like the book for what it says about groups of people basically needing to adapt to a changing environment. I think it has some worthwhile information in that regard and the case studies were engaging, but I did get bogged down in places. I think the author could have picked up the pace in some of the vignettes and stretched it out a bit in the analysis at the end. Also, I read this for a class that required me to find independent peer reviewed sources. Many of them contradicted the author's anthropological and climatological conclusions. Use it as a parable and you're fine. Look too close and you may get lost in the weeds.

The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right, by Atul Gawande

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best Books of the Month, December 2009: With a title like The Checklist Manifesto, it would be natural to expect that Atul Gawande is bent on revolutionizing that most loved-hated activity of workers the world over: the to-do list. But it's not the list itself he wants to change; there are no programmatic steps or tables here to help you reshuffle daily tasks. What you'll find instead is a remarkably liberating and persuasive inquiry into what it takes to work successfully and with a personal sense of satisfaction. The first thing you'll realize is that it takes more than just one person to do a job well. This is a toppling revelation made all the more powerful by Gawande's skillful blend of anecdote and practical wisdom as he profiles his own experience as a surgeon and seeks out a wide range of other professions to show that a team is only as strong as its checklist--by his definition, a way of organizing that empowers people at all levels to put their best knowledge to use, communicate at crucial points, and get things done. Like no other book before it, The Checklist Manifesto is at once a restorative call to action and a welcome voice of reason. --Anne Bartholomew Amazon Exclusive: Malcolm Gladwell Reviews The Checklist Manifesto Malcolm Gladwell was named one of TIME magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2005. He is most recently the author of What the Dog Saw (a collection of his writing from The New Yorker) as well as the New York Times bestsellers Outliers, The Tipping Point, and Blink. Read his exclusive Amazon guest review of The Checklist Manifesto: Over the past decade, through his writing in The New Yorker magazine and his books Complications and Better, Atul Gawande has made a name for himself as a writer of exquisitely crafted meditations on the problems and challenges of modern medicine. His latest book, The Checklist Manifesto, begins on familiar ground, with his experiences as a surgeon. But before long it becomes clear that he is really interested in a problem that afflicts virtually every aspect of the modern world--and that is how professionals deal with the increasing complexity of their responsibilities. It has been years since I read a book so powerful and so thought-provoking. Gawande begins by making a distinction between errors of ignorance (mistakes we make because we don't know enough), and errors of ineptitude (mistakes we made because we don’t make proper use of what we know). Failure in the modern world, he writes, is really about the second of these errors, and he walks us through a series of examples from medicine showing how the routine tasks of surgeons have now become so incredibly complicated that mistakes of one kind or another are virtually inevitable: it's just too easy for an otherwise competent doctor to miss a step, or forget to ask a key question or, in the stress and pressure of the moment, to fail to plan properly for every eventuality. Gawande then visits with pilots and the people who build skyscrapers and comes back with a solution. Experts need checklists--literally--written guides that walk them through the key steps in any complex procedure. In the last section of the book, Gawande shows how his research team has taken this idea, developed a safe surgery checklist, and applied it around the world, with staggering success. The danger, in a review as short as this, is that it makes Gawande’s book seem narrow in focus or prosaic in its conclusions. It is neither. Gawande is a gorgeous writer and storyteller, and the aims of this book are ambitious. Gawande thinks that the modern world requires us to revisit what we mean by expertise: that experts need help, and that progress depends on experts having the humility to concede that they need help. --Malcolm Gladwell

From Publishers Weekly

That humblest of quality-control devices, the checklist, is the key to taming a high-tech economy, argues this stimulating manifesto. Harvard Medical School prof and New Yorker scribe Gawande (Complications) notes that the high-pressure complexities of modern professional occupations overwhelm even their best-trained practitioners; he argues that a disciplined adherence to essential procedures—by ticking them off a list—can prevent potentially fatal mistakes and corner cutting. He examines checklists in aviation, construction, and investing, but focuses on medicine, where checklists mandating simple measures like hand washing have dramatically reduced hospital-caused infections and other complications. Gawande gets slightly intoxicated over checklists, celebrating their most banal manifestations as promethean breakthroughs (First there was the recipe, the most basic checklist of all, he intones in a restaurant kitchen). He's at his best delivering his usual rich, insightful reportage on medical practice, where checklists have the subversive effect of puncturing the cult of physician infallibility and fostering communication and teamwork. (After writing a checklist for his specialty, surgery, he is chagrined when it catches his own disastrous lapses.) Gawande gives a vivid, punchy exposition of an intriguing idea: that by-the-book routine trumps individual prowess. (Jan.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Meh. The book is WAY over-hyped!! It spends MOST of its long never-ending pages explaining medical scenarios. It's unbelievable....I felt as if I was studying my Paramedic book again! All that nonsense to get to "Checklists are good...you should develop one for everything you do". That's it folks...I just gave you the cliff Notes for the ENTIRE book! Even the sample checklists (all two of them) they illustrate are a joke.Pay ME whatever this book costs, and I'll actually MAKE a checklist for you! Tell ya what...contact me if you want the book. I'll give it to you if you just pay shipping. Very disappointing!

Despite our vast knowledge in virtually every area of life, Gawande believes we are still deeply prone to failure. He believes many such failures could be overcome (and, conversely, much success obtained) through a simple but often ignored tool, the checklist. He writes:That means we need a different strategy for overcoming failure, one that builds on experience and takes advantage of the inevitable human inadequacies. And there is such a strategy though it will seem almost ridiculous in its simplicity, maybe even crazy to those of us who have spent years carefully developing ever more advanced skills and technologies. It is a checklist (p. 13).Gawande supports his conviction through the use of interesting, true accounts drawn from several areas: medicine (chapters 1, 2, 5, 7 and 8), aviation (chapter 6 and pp. 32-34, 173-182), construction (chapter 3), national disasters (chapter 4), factories (chapter 6), and investments (chapter 8).The author believes that we normally do not look for patterns in our failures but we should, and the simple checklist could serve as our guide (p. 185). I, personally, have always made use of checklists, finding them a valuable means to keep me on task and remind me of what needs to be done. But The Checklist Manifesto has challenged me to step up my game, especially in my supervision of others and in accomplishing long term and/or complex goals. I think most everyone would benefit from reading this well-written, interesting, and helpful book.Reviewed by Gary E. Gilley, Pastor-teacher, Southern View Chapel

Loaded with anecdotes with little scientific backing. Not much to get out of this book other than "checklists can be useful for some situations." If the author ever chooses to write an update, I hope he adds some how-to info and includes such items as criteria for making a good checklist, best practices for checklist structuring and development, etc.

I had to read this book for work, and I wasn't looking forward to it. To my surprise it has a very good narrative is quite readable. The examples used are compelling and keep the pages turning. By the end it had me thinking of our processes and I have my team scouring them looking for places where a checklist would be appropriate. If you're concerned about quality, you should give this book a try.

I bought this for my niece who is a nurse, after my brother's hospital experience was unsatisfactory. Knowledge, history, and status weren't shared by the staff and there was no mechanism for tracking details, like the fact that he was diabetic though recovering from a surgery (related to the diabetes). There were bad estimates of his pain level from the staff not knowing he had had two strokes. And he got a terrible bed sore. My niece works in a different hospital where she described her reputation for documenting everything meticulously. I thought I would give her some further support for this practice. Gawande is the go-to guy for all things medical, and especially for wisdom related to medical and hospital practice. He has data, narratives, and is authoritative. Many errors and hospital acquired complications can be avoided with checklists that keep everyone on all shift on the same page. They are more detailed than normal white board status reports. I noted that a hospital near me, when I went for a diagnostic test, seemed to use the practice. Every new person who entered the room asked my name and what I was there for. While repetitive, it eliminates the possibility of the wrong procedure happening to someone. I also recommend Jerome Groopman for other medical practice wisdom.

I suppose you could order the abbreviated summary version of the book to get the main idea and you might already suspect that the main idea is that checklists are the way to get things right. I must say, however, that the main idea is just the destination and understanding how Atul arrived at this simple and perhaps obvious result is just as important in driving the point home. I am only three chapters in and the point has been made but the supporting evidence around how and why checklists are the way has been profoundly moving.

Very interesting exploration of the benefits of using checklists in various industries (but mainly in operating theaters in hospital) to facilitate consistency which leads to improvements in many areas : productivity, safety, profitability to name but a few. The author is a highly experienced surgeon who saw the advantages of introducing checklists to radically improve patient safety during operations and in recovery. What I found shocking from reading this book was the sheer number of mistakes that are routinely made in operating theaters around the world which lead to poor recovery rates and even death in some cases. The benefit of introducing checklists into theater was enforcement of policy that all staff during an op were now "singing off the same hymn sheet". The book alludes to this idea repeatedly. The book was very readable my only gripe was I'd have liked to have seen an example of the checklists that the author referred to.

The Alchemist is just one book of this remarkable series of books, and it is better to comment on the whole series as I just finished reading them all, back to back. I'm 76, been reading sci fi and fantasy since I was 12 or so, that is a slew of books. And that includes all the recent series of books that have been published as "young adult" literature, and I have found them all entertaining reading. And, I have to put this series by Michael Scott at the top of the list, more interesting characters, more twists and turns and surprize in the plot that you can imagine, and not a dull moment through the whole series. I really recommend them if you have any taste at all for this kind of literature. Just give yourself some space to read, once you start, it is very difficult to stop. Enjoy!

This is yet another book that has been on my to-read list forever, and I’m so happy I finally got to read it! The first book follows a brother and a sister who are twins — when trying to help out a bookshop owner who seems to be in trouble, they discover that he’s actually Nicholas Flamel, an alchemist who discovered the secret of immortality. Other forces want the secret for themselves and steal the book where everything’s written down. Because the twins helped Nicholas out, they get mixed up in this fight for control and are enlisted to help Nicholas get the book back. The Alchemyst begins a series of six books, and because of that focuses a lot on worldbuilding and setting up what’s going to be the focus for the rest of the series. So, it’s a bit slow and while there are some moments of action and conflict, a lot of it is exposition. I really like the mythology that’s set up within the story; there are Dark Elders (we think of them as gods) who used to be in power on Earth and want their power back, so they’ve been working with John Dee (another human immortal) to help them take it back — in exchange for tempting rewards for doing so, of course. There are Elders who haven’t turned dark and are happy to leave things as they are, so Nicholas turns to them to help him get the book back so that the world isn’t put in danger. For mythology buffs, it’s fun to see familiar gods, like Hecate, and read Michael Scott’s vision of how she would live and how her home would look. I also like having the familiar historical figures of Flamel and Dee included in the book. The way that magic works and how it is described is fascinating — I like the idea of magic being an extension of someone’s aura. Overall, this book has interesting ideas and being able to spend time in this world that Scott has created is a joy. However, as first mentioned, it’s a lot of exposition. I wish there were a bit more action or conflict, but hopefully that’ll be present in future books. As a first book, this is pretty good. It’s not the most enthralling start to a series, but it looks like it’s setting up a really good fantasy story, complete with crazy magic, prophecies, betrayals, etc. I’m excited to see how it’s all going to turn out and am very much looking forward to the sequels. I can’t say whether this is a must-read series or not, but it’s looking promising.

I really love the unique approach at historical fiction combined with science fiction and fantasy in this book. Things like immortal humans, vampires and magic are approached with such detail that there is no room for doubt. The characters have a solid level of development to them and are pretty easy to relate to. I find myself disliking Nicholas Flamel though because he’s not very forthcoming with information, which frustrates me given the situation in which he finds himself.I love the connection that Sophie and Josh have throughout the book, even after Josh begins feeling less important. I’m really happy the author took the time to emphasize how average the two were before that fateful day in the bookshop because it helped keep focus on how lost they are in the world they’ve been thrust into. The story is interesting and moves really well. I had trouble putting it down! For this review and more, please visit my blog at vicariousbookworm.wordpress.com

Josh Newman is hard at work one day when a man by the name of Dr. John Dee enters the building and begins a full out magical battle with his boss, Nick Fleming, while his twin sister Sophie, who works across the street, comes to the scene of the crime with her boss and Nick’s wife, Perry Fleming. Nick and Perry Fleming are really Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel and they are hundreds of years old. Nick was said to be the greatest alchemyst ever and he knows the secret to life (how he and Perry stay alive). Dee is a necromancer and is doing everything in his power to get rid of Nick and Perry for good. He takes a very important book from them called the Book of Abraham the Mage, and without it, things can go terribly wrong. Especially when put into the wrong hands. Nick sees Sophie and Josh as the subject of the prophecy that he knows… the twins hold the power to both destroy and save the world. Nick takes Sophie and Josh to meet Hekate who has the power to awaken the twins’ powers. Dee does his dirty work and tries to trick people because it’s what he does best, but it doesn’t really work in his favor. Sophie and Josh are taken on the adventure of a lifetime. This novel was very well written. It is one I have read multiple times. It is full of mystery, magic, and thrilling adventure. It leaves readers wanting more. If you enjoy mystery and magic, this is the perfect book for you! Especially because there are more books to follow in this series. One thing I like about the storyline is how Josh and Sophie fit in. They have a unique brother/sister bond that makes the story better. I’m not one to be interested in these kinds of books, but I enjoyed reading this very much, and I look forward to reading more of the books in this series.

Beyond the Highland Mist (Highlander, Book 1), by Karen Marie Moning

From Publishers Weekly

Moning offers the promise of a terrific plotline in her debut romance: a troubled young woman, Adrienne is transported from the 20th century to 16th-century Scotland by an evil jester to take revenge on a Scottish laird. The author has the right characters: there's the heroine who doesn't trust beautiful men and a handsome hero cursed to love a woman who will not return his love. Add gypsies and Scottish mysticism, against the backdrop of the stark beauty of the Highlands, and you've got an intriguing story. The lovers endure quite a bit of torment in order to find happiness, a downer that even Moning's doses of humor can't always leaven. Unfortunately, Moning doesn't fully deliver: she too often relies on transparent plot devices, and while her falconry imagery is both poignant and sensual, it will remind readers of Elizabeth Lowell's Untamed. From the Inside Flap

He would sell his warrior soul to possess her. . . . An alluring laird... He was known throughout the kingdom as Hawk, legendary predator of the battlefield and the boudoir. No woman could refuse his touch, but no woman ever stirred his heart--until a vengeful fairy tumbled Adrienne de Simone out of modern-day Seattle and into medieval Scotland. Captive in a century not her own, entirely too bold, too outspoken, she was an irresistible challenge to the sixteenth-century rogue. Coerced into a marriage with Hawk, Adrienne vowed to keep him at arm's length--but his sweet seduction played havoc with her resolve. A prisoner in time... She had a perfect "no" on her perfect lips for the notorious laird, but Hawk swore she would whisper his name with desire, begging for the passion he longed to ignite within her. Not even the barriers of time and space would keep him from winning her love. "This cannot be happening. This is not possible. This cannot be happening. Yet in the forefront of her mind, realist that she was, she understood that the words can't and impossible had not bearing when the impossible was indeed happening.Unless she woke up soon from a nightmarish and vivid dream, she was in Scotland, the year 1513, and she was indeed getting married."FINAL DECISION: An enjoyable and interesting mix of genres, I thoroughly enjoyed the story but felt that the mixture was clunky at times. I was both compelled by the story and also felt that this book needed more in the way of world-building to make this a great book. I would definitely read more based on the romance alone.THE STORY: Adrienne de Simone has been cured of the attraction to handsome men. After the horrible experience, Adrienne knows that she will never trust a handsome man again. For this reason, Adrienne is chosen by a vengeful fey to bring her back in time almost 500 years in order to torment the fey's enemy.Highlander Sidheach James Lyon Douglas, third earl of Dalkeith, known as The Hawk, has been a womanizer and has become a great lover. When the queen of the fey praises him too much, the Fae king and fool seek revenge by saddling him with a wife who will never love him and might even be persuaded to betray him. As a result of their intervention, Adrienne ends up taking the place of the Hawk's betrothed. Adrienne and The Hawk begin an contentious relationship. While the Hawk begins to fall for his wife, Adrienne remains committed to not being foolish again. The two have to confront Adrienne's distrust, Hawk's painful past and lovers, and the enmity of the Fae.OPINION: I thought this book was an intriguing mix of genres. That was one of its great strengths because it felt intriguing and fresh. It was also its greatest weakness because the mix didn't always mesh well. In the years since this book was written, many authors have taken to the mixing of genres and this early innovator suffers a bit in comparison. That being said, I enjoyed the romance and the interaction between the characters and I am willing to read more of the series to see how Moning developed the mixture of genres in future books. The interaction between Adrienne and Hawk was a highlight of the book for me. Hawk was not what I expected in the book. It was especially nice to see such a strong, sexy, handsome historical character who really just wanted peace and a family. I liked how Hawk is a little clueless about how to have a relationship with Adrienne and continues to make mistakes that complicate his courtship. The book contains an interesting twist about his reputation with women that gives him a sympathetic past. At the same time, his painful past was written in a lighter fashion than I generally prefer. Despite his history (and that of Adrienne as well) the emphasis in the book is on the present story. While the characters have a history, it is quickly subsumed in the drama of the present.Adrienne is a modern woman who is swept into the past. One of the problems I had with the book was that she didn't seem to have any trouble with adapting to the past. There was little time paid to the disorientation that would have to result. (I thought that the similar A KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR by Jude Deveraux did a better job with dealing with that complication). But this book seems to be more of a paranormal fantasy book in that regard than a true time-travel.As for the romance, I loved it and really connected with the characters. If this had been written as a historical or time-travel book, I might have given it a higher rating. At the same time, the paranormal elements are what make this book unique and memorable. I just felt that this book reads as a historical/time-travel in which the paranormal elements were not integrated as well. The Fae seem a bit disjointed from the rest of the book because they remain without a true history or world. There is some of the feel of Shakespeare's A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM where the fairies interfere with the mortal world, but the Fae here feel less developed than I need to truly love this book. While I didn't love this book, I was intrigued and fascinated by it and the possibilities as the author developed her craft further. This was my first book by Moning, but I definitely will continue reading the series.WORTH MENTIONING: This book mixes paranormal, historical and time-travel. It definitely pushes the boundaries of what can be expected in one romance book.CONNECTED BOOKS: BEYOND THE HIGHLAND MIST is the first book in the Highlander series.STAR RATING: I give this book 3.5 stars.

This was a great book and very well written, BUT it definitely was not a book would read again. I rated the 5 stars because it deserved it and not because it was my kind of read. I can see how most would love this book. The h was a complete B up to 65% of the book and I really hated that. There was reason but I just don't like that in what is supposed to a romance novel. The H was so wonderful to her and she was so awful no matter what he did. I have a real problem with that. Maybe up to 35% would have been fine but not 65 to 70% of a book. It's just not what I like to read. I finished simply because there were so many other things to enjoy. My heart truly went out to the H. Half the time I spent wishing he would just throw the h over a cliff. To be honest I never really felt like the h was good enough for the H. I realize that many people would have rated the book MUCH lower if they felt the way I did about the h, but I don't see that as being fair to the author. The h was just a personal preference in a romance. I'm truly on the fence about reading the next book in the series simply based on my hate of the h, BUT there were so many good aspects of this book that it leaves me wanting to read the next. I only hope the h in the next one isn't anywhere near as awful as the one in the first book.If your looking for a book filled with great sex scenes this book is not the one for you. Nothing happens until 70% and considering the H is supposed to be sex god it sorely lacked in that department. When it FINALLY happened it was not at all what I expected. That gave me another reason to be on the fence about reading the next in the series. I know there are people who don't like much sex in their reads, so if your fine with that then you'll love this book.

UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HATE THIS BOOK, DON'T STOP AT THIS FIRST OF 7 VOLUMES, EACH VOLUME EXPLAINS SOME OF THE PREVIOUS AND HELPS UNDERSTAND LATER VOLUMES - THEN ONCE READ, GO BACK AND RE-READ THEM AGAIN- You'll love the end resultThe fact that this is the first of 7 books in a series is unfortunate and I really hope that others do what I did - purchased them all at the same time through Amazon's wonderful Mass Market paperback media. I was then able to read them in her written sequence one immediately after another so that the read became a series of "acts" in a long play, rather than a finished production after each book. To those who didn't particularly care for the character of the "heroine", you will inevitably fall in love with any or most of the other six in the series, but facts in each book, are necessary to make sense in other of the books.. For the writer that is concerned with "factual" Scotland, I say, obviously that you prefer "probable to possible". After all, western Europe was exposed to Eastern delicacies like coffee and tea since the 11the century and the opening of the silk trade route. In a world of fae, and beserkers, time travel and Adam Black, anything is possible if one believes in an omnipotent diety.I focus on personality and character interaction through detail within a story and attempt to "create" in my own mind, what the author was omitting from a story. Because it is a series, it implies that there is some connection between what appears on the surface to be three totally unrelated groups of characters, held together only by their interaction with the fae world. The sifting from central character groups and centuries was a bid disconcerting but by the last book, the relationships were a bit clearer AND, re-reading the series after knowing more about the interactions, made the details more visible, the actions more "ah-h, that's why!" and the reading more interesting. Im on my third read and there is still items to be discovered within the words of the author and the story she weaves. In the end, Adam became my favorite character even though he began as the one that everyone loves to hate- but then "bad boys" viz James Dean and Robert Mitchum, were always my favorite. LOL
