I would have thought it impossible to be disappointed by such an obviously great idea, but disappointed I am. The proofs are written in oddly poor fashion; almost like a quick first draft, with definitions frequently following use, trivial ideas spelled out while complex steps are omitted, and random use of advanced, often undefined, terminology amidst otherwise low-level proofs. Sometimes you are treated like a beginning trigonometry student then suddenly, mid-proof, graduate level knowledge is invoked for a single line. It is a jarring style that continues throughout.There is also an extreme emphasis on graph theory. Maybe this is inspired by Paul Erdos' career - I don't know enough to say, although I never gathered that impression. But I can say many suitable classic proofs, and indeed whole fields of mathematics, are missing while there is much more graph theory than the TOC would suggest.That said, there are many beautiful ideas within. If one can overlook the annoyance of the presentation, there is a lot of entertainment to be had.The potential is obvious. As this is the 5th edition I must assume the authors are committed to this style. But perhaps another author will be inspired to create their own "Book" without these glaring flaws.

A treasure trove of fascinating information that enchants as it informs. Densely packed, so read and digest only a few pages a day.

Caroline Kaufman's twitter handle is @itspoeticpoison, but her verse is anything but poisonous.I would give this slim volume - which I have read slowly, rereading many pages - I would give it ten stars if GR had them to give. The words are that beautiful, that haunting, that healing.I know firsthand the cathartic power of writing. To pour something unwanted out of yourself into words. To leave it there, on the page, and walk away. Free, or at least freer than before. These poems progress, each one a little closer to understanding. To wholeness and peace. The result is a satisfying, though emotional, journey.I won't compare Kaufman to other poets. There is no comparison. She's written what only she could write. (Who can ask a writer for more than that?) Light Filters In is wholly original. I suspect many, many young people have found and will find comfort and companionship in these poems. The imagery and language, the movement and beauty, and the emotions so elegantly conveyed herein moved me to compassion.I will keep this one handy on my Kindle, so that I can return to it again and again.

an incredibly unique collection of poems that any reader can relate. the book delivers powerful messages about self-love and acceptance, equality, and the journey of life. it has a thoughtful and creative structure that tells a story as the reader progresses through the book.

I found the story within these poems captivating, reminiscent of many teenage girl's struggles with identity, self love, and facing inner and outer demons. The author's voice is well beyond her years as she articulates dark subject matter very well! Perhaps my favorite poem in this collection is the one with the analogy of yarn and pink and blue, so powerful and cleverly written!

This collection was everything I wanted it to be and more. I was able to resonate with so many of the poems, and they took me from fond memories to heart-wrenching pain. I can’t wait to read more of Caroline’s work.

This is truly an amazing read by an author who captures depression in an authentic, raw light. Her words move you, resonate with you and heal you all at the same time. True talent at its finest is the only worthy explanation of this novel. The best book I ever read, hands down.

This book has a good story line, but unfortunately the author did not do her homework. The text is riddled with mistakes. For example, dominant genes are NOT ones we are most likely to inherit; they are ones most likely to be expressed. The gene for white eyes in fruit flies is NOT on the Y chromosome; it is on the X chromosome. Pangolins' tongues do NOT attach to their pelvis. The maps that were made in Thomas Hunt Morgan's lab were NOT DNA sequences; they were linkage maps of genes that were located on the same chromosome. There are likely more problems. These are the ones I found in a quick reading of about half the book. Children deserve accurate information. Are there any scientifically literate children's book editors out there?

The basics of genetics is explained in simple, clear language and reveals the fascinating stories of the researchers who discovered what is now the history of DNA. As readers learn the science of genes they will apply what they learn in a cartoon challenge to help a new detective solve a major crime based on a real-world case. From genetically engineered pets to a dating app that helps Icelanders avoid marrying their cousins readers will learn the history and current application of DNA.The writing was easy to follow and even entertaining, I would hazard a guess and say the science introduced is approximately equivalent to what I was learning in Jr. High (grades 6-9). I speed read a bit through the parts I already knew but even for me there were interesting facts I didn't know. I thoroughly enjoyed the factual portion of this book - it was light hearted and not too "sciency", I even found myself laughing out loud on several occasions. There are a couple ideas in here that I even want to follow up on with more research. This book would be great for pre-teens and teens who already love forensics and science as well as students who are maybe struggling with science and need a way to reignite interest or catch up on some basics.I like non-fiction books, and the description of this book had me really excited. I thought it was going to take me through a crime and how DNA solved it, with the crime activity being the primary part of the book. The description and the cover both made this seem the case. But, sadly, it's not. This is still an excellent introduction to the basics of genetics and the facts alone make the book worth reading but the detective case - the "DNA Detective" - was tacked on as if it were a last minute idea by the marketing agent to draw in more teen readers. If you are looking for a book with a fun activity to keep interest, or pictures like a graphic novel, this is not the book for you.**I received a free ARC in exchange for my honest review.**

We are homeschoolers, and I'm always on the hunt for science books that are interesting and also cover high level concepts rather than "dumbing things down" to make them easy to understand. This book definitely fits the bill!This book has excellent coverage of DNA and genetics, with lots of interesting stories and facts. The pictures and graphics are outstanding and add a lot to the fun of reading this book. We also enjoyed the interactive crime solving, which shows how DNA information could be used in a real-world situation.I'd recommend this book for upper elementary / middle school (possibly with some help on vocabulary for the younger end). I also used it as a read aloud for my second graders with lots of discussion and they got a lot out of it - but we will come back around to it again when they are closer to middle school and can absorb all of the information.Disclosure: I received a copy from NetGalley for review. Loved it enough I am now buying a hard copy from Amazon!

This book is more about genetics than it is about solving a crime. The lesson of each chapter is applied at the end of the chapter in eliminating suspects in the jewelry store heist.Genetics was my favorite part of my AP Biology class back in the early ‘80s, so some of this material was familiar to me. But there was much more that I hadn’t known before—not to mention that the field has made huge advances since I took that AP exam over 30 years ago! The explanatory tone is just right, with just enough levity. It does not come off sounding dumbed down.Note that sperm and eggs and fertilization are mentioned, but not how that fertilization actually takes place.This is a great resource for a school science class. Very educational, but light-hearted mystery-information. I have a genetic disorder and thought I knew about genetics, but I learned a lot from this book. My 9 yr. old twins will inherit it, and I hope they use it for school papers.

This is a great book, filled with high quality photo about the north pole. This is virtual the same review as the Deep Blue Sea by the same publisher. The reason is that it follows the same format (which is a GOOD thing) by showcasing a LOT of high quality and visually pleasing photographs which is worth giving this book a look at. It only contains 14 pages, but they are all filled with images and text about the ocean. I'm viewing it on an eReader so these are most likely full spread pages in paper books, so it's closer to a 30 page book. Each double page spread contains one to three descriptive sentences about the north pole. What's great about this is that it has a lot of high quality photos. Some of the other books by this same publisher didn't contain a lot of interesting photos, or photos which just weren't that great quality. In this book, I'm glad that the author/publisher was more picky in what they ending up placing into their book. You will be happy with the quality of the photos and mini facts in this book. This book would probably be great to read to children between the ages of 0-6 and perhaps children between the ages 5-8 could read the book themselves.
