If you are interested in more than just a collection of recipes, this book is for your! The author gives a sweeping introduction to the geography, history, culture and foods of South America. I'm embarrassed to admit I know very little about this continent, so really enjoyed the introduction. Highly recommended to anyone who likes to know more about the origins of their recipes!

This book has so many things - historical info, personal anecdotes, food facts and authentic recipes. There are many recipes worth trying. From simple to more involved, there is a wide variety that showcases the flavors of the region. For someone new to South American culture and cooking this book is a perfect choice.

I have LOTS of cookbooks, and I cook all the time. At this point, it's rare that a cookbook isn't 2/3 variations on recipes I have in other cookbooks, I don't mind, it's just what happens when you have that many cookbooks, and actually read and use them...This book has all kinds of new recipes, and although I haven't tried many of them, they all look like they will work and be delicious. It's the same ingredients, but put together in different ways, with one or two new parings... I am so glad I bought the book, would recommend it highly.

This is a fantastic cookbook written over 15 years with accolades from Charlie Trotter. It has won many awards as the best South American cookbook ever. There is history of various regions and the recipes are easy to follow and organized perfectly. It is not a picture recipe book but that is not necessary in Maria’s complete explanations. A true treasure!

This book is way more than just the very best cook book of Latin American food...it's a short history of South America. From the time I opened it, I could not stop reading until I got to the end of the South America background information. I am from Venezuela and loved ALL the recipes. The lack of pictures is not a big deal at all, because the words are totally descriptive. Now that I have this book, I don't see the need for any other.

This was a great deal, the book was a good price, and it is in the condition they said it would be. The recipes look interesting too; no photos but I'm an experienced cook, after fifty years of cooking I should hope so...Anyway I will definitely order more from them.

I recently took this book out on loan from my local libary, but love it so much, I'm going to buy a copy for myself. I am half-Colombian and grew up in New York where South American cuisine, particularly Colombian, was plentiful (from homecooked, family meals to countless restaurants in Queens). I've been living in California for ten years and often long for an authentic sancocho, platanos, arepas, empanadas, aji piques, etc, but have never had any luck. Now, with these recipes and the wonderfully informative glossary of South American ingredients - and where to get them - I can make the meals I love so much myself and discover so many others. I especially enjoyed the brief history of the South American cuisine.

This has a really comprehensive introduction which explains Latin American regional differences in cooking based on the locally available resources and on the merging of preparation methods of old world and new world populations. The introduction alone is worth the price of the book.

Photos are included throughout this book.Keep in mind that this is a memoir, which is considered literary nonfiction. So, there are moments when she does recount her thoughts and feelings during this time. Ocasionally, she will discuss her life in Germany while working as a young reporter; this adds to the setting during this time since her and other reporters had no warm running water etc...as a result of the war.I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the facts during the Holocaust, specifically the atrosities committed by Nazi doctors to innocent civilians in Germany.

There were many more medical personnel involved in crimes against humanity, beginning with the mass extermination of disabled Germans. I've always been very disturbed by the decision to not prosecute more people.I don't believe any of the doctors who experimented on prisoners in Japanese POW camps were ever prosecuted, and Japan did begin to publicly admit and apologize for its war crimes until the 21st century.Turkey continues to deny the Armenian genocide. I cannot respect a nation until there has been a full public admission and apology.

This book truly opened my eyes to the horrors endured .How tragic that so many innocent people were literally slaughtered for experiments . That were seen as essential.How disgusting that men and women swore to upheld the oath of healing could with help of the SS , and think nothing of torturing in the name of science,.I was deeply saddened by the truth and horrors that mankind can inflict with no remorse or guilt., such unimaginable cruelty.

Intense. Not for the average reader. I am an adult, and I had nightmares about this book. Make sure you're ready for it, if you chose to buy it. I had no idea that this happened. I'm not sorry I read it because it brought the Holocaust to light for me. We should probably all know that this really happened.

This book, is a difficult must read. Written incredibly well and structurally perfect it leads the reader through the darkest of events. Each experiment seemingly more atrocious with every section. And while it was so hard to read, that is a compelling reason why it must be.

Written from the perspective of a female court reporter during the “doctors trial” in Nuremberg she proceeds to tell what transpired during the trial as well as what what said and talked about on the stand informative and entertaining my only dislike is at some points and (not for very long) she gets a little off subject and talks about her personal experiences during the course of the trial which to me personally is side tracking but all in all a good book if you are interested in the subject matter

In Listening to Whales, Alexandra Morton shares spellbinding stories about her career in whale and dolphin research and what she has learned from and about these magnificent mammals. In the late 1970s, while working at Marineland in California, Alexandra pioneered the recording of orca sounds by dropping a hydrophone into the tank of two killer whales. She recorded the varied language of mating, childbirth, and even grief after the birth of a stillborn calf. At the same time she made the startling observation that the whales were inventing wonderful synchronized movements, a behavior that was soon recognized as a defining characteristic of orca society. In 1984, Alexandra moved to a remote bay in British Columbia to continue her research with wild orcas. This is a personal biography as much as it is a book about killer whales. It tells the life story of a researcher trying to decipher the complex sonic language of these magical beasts but in the process the author connects us to these beasts in a very personal emotional way. I was very touched by descriptions of the plight of these magnificent, highly social, intelligent beasts confined in small pools at marine parks. The book moves from research done at these parks to the straits of Georgia where the author relocates to study the whales in their native habitat. From this vantage point the ecological disaster of the salmon fish farms is described that will persuade you to never buy farmed fish. If you are interested in learning more about the social life and the communications of killer whales in a book that is a good read then this one is for you

To experience this book is like hearing the blood pump throuth Alexandra Morton's veins. She IS the words embodied here. If you've ever wondered what it is to really feel a part of Nature's wide family, read this book. If you've ever wondered what it might be like to live in the sea and view the sun through the lens of the water, read this book. If you've ever wondered what joy there might be to call at night to your clan and have them gather 'round you with chirps and whistles and maybe even love, read this book.Alexandra Morton knows Orcas, and I'm wagering they know her too. Her story is charged with ecstasy, adventure, tragedy and poignancy. You can get the plot from everyone else. What I'm telling you is that this story will enthrall you. You may even be changed by it. Now THAT's worth a read.

I enjoyed this book tremendously. It was educational, interesting, and fun to read. It's terribly sad what the Salmon farms and their pollution have done to waters once teeming with life. If the Government's of the world had a lick of sense they would shut them all down. Cheap Salmon isn't worth the destruction up and down the food chain. At some point we are going to have to decide what's more important, Corporations making more money,or life on this planet.(including ours) I know which side I am taking. Thank you Ms. Morton for taking the time to write this fascinating book.

This is the autobiography (so far) of whale researcher Alexandra Morton who came to the remote Broughton Archipelago in 1984 to study orcas and was herself woven by nature into the warp and woof of that amazing place. While telling a fascinating story the book imparts a great deal of knowledge in so painless a manner that we hardly notice. We learn, for example, that there are three kinds of orcas: "residents," who eat mostly fish; "transients" who eat mostly seals and sea lions; and "offshores" who--nobody knows for sure--may well eat mostly sharks. Though whales, both captive and free, are the stars of this story, the real star is the Broughton itself with its myriad islands and channels, its sunny summer breezes and howling winter storms. With so few people living in the Broughton, the BC government pillages its islands with clearcuts, and both levels of government cooperate to pollute its waters with open netcage salmon farms. Courageous residents fight a running battle to protect the wild coast and wild fish they love from the blindness of bureaucrats and the greed of multinational corporations. This wonderful story, which is all true, will make you cry for the ocean, and at the same time renew your hope in the power of courageous people to change the world. If you have a kayak, go and paddle through the Broughton that Alexandra and her friends are fighting to save for us. You might even be able to help.

I didn't realize until I read the book how drawn I am to marine biology esp. whales. She starts in Malibu with Dr. Lilly and moves to the old Marineland where she listens herself and ends up on Vancouver Island where pods were just beginning to be studied.I expected something more New Age. She sticks to well-documented ideas about orca's social behavior. When she feels things beyond what is scientificly proved, she says that this is what she felt and you feel for someone who has devoted this much time and thought to these animals her observations are not inappropriate. This is now one of my favorite books.

This boom was recommended to me by my husband and I'm very glad I read it. I learned so.much about the whale and their environment from reading Alex's words. the section on fish farming made me particularly angry. We owe earth a more responsible treatment. Thanks Alex, for sharing your work.

Mrs. Morton describes in infinite detail her life exploring and researching the orcas of the Canadian northwest. This is an autobiography of her life, her experiences, and her research. Very interesting, at times heartbreaking, and ending as uplifting and hopeful. I highly recommend this book!

This anthology is a unique way to get students excited about creating poetry. Each section begins with an open letter from a real, published poet. They write about the writing process, their inspirations, and how they decide what to write about. Then there are one or two poems by that poet. I read aloud one letter/poem each day during our poetry unit. My fifth graders loved it. It was like having a real poet in the room conversing with them. Subsequently, I found my students own poetry was some of the best I have seen my students produce.

This book's subtitle is "Advice and Inspiration for Young Poets," and the book lives up to its promise, and then some. Editor Paul B. Janeczko asked 32 poets for young people to write a letter of advice or inspiration to kids who want to write poetry. The 32 poets did just that, and each included two of his/her poems. This is the kind of book you don't have to read in any order: you just look at a name you know, or a poem whose title intrigues you, and you leap in. Inspiring . . . and not just for children.

Incredible! I felt like the poets were talking to me as I read the book. They inspire both younger and older audiences to be brave and give poetry writing a try. Wonderful selection of poems as well as advice!

A wonderful book for the young poet. A must.

With the words of 32 children's poets between the covers, this books serves as a great introduction between children and the world of poetry. Poets such as Jane Yolen, Jack Prelutsky, Lee Bennett Hopkins and others have written a personal letter to children regarding what poetry means to them, as well as how it is incorporated into their personal lives.Followed by this letter is one of their poems. It's like having a real discussion with the poet and then watching him/her perform through their work.My favorite was Anthony Hudgins because his letter mentioned that he's always got a book of poems by his bedside to help him unwind from the day, one in his car in case he gets stuck anywhere, and always one in the bathroom. Hudgins points out that this is better than a novel because with poetry "you can finish your body business and your poetry business" at about the same time...not so with a novel, especially if your memory is not so keen.He follows his letter with the poem "Grandmother's Spit." This poem reminded me of countless older ladies who would spit on their fingers and then swab away some food or dirt from my cheek, for the sake of sanitation.The book closes with a Notes section on the contributors, allowing another glimpse into a poets' life, one that says, "Yes, we are real people with real families and we like real things...and we show it through our poetry."

I recommend this book to parents, teachers, school librarians, and all who love to read and be inspired by poetry! I think even younger children can understand the poems in this great book. My favorite is the title poem. We all have found objects in clouds, but have you ever thought about "Seeing the Blue Between"? Kristine O'Connell George does!
