I got this book, that's why! This little tome has plate after plate of various decorations and embellishments, made to persons, architecture, glass, pottery. My only quibble is that they are immaculately sourced, but not described. The illos are all copyright free. Be prepared to enlarge as you copy, though; some of the details are way wee bitty.

Exactly what it says it is. It gives a great overview of the different historical styles of ornament. More a survey than anything in depth.

Very nice.

Excellent product

Loved it!

Anyone who wants to stare at design wonders, through the ages , will be amazed by this volume. Just as the previous reviewer, I have been using this book for along time , at least twenty years. It is a smorgasbord of ornamental knowledge , that can be used over and over , to help you discern the subtle differences between epochs , and give you many templates to work with. To all decorative painters, and artists: Enjoy and use wisely.

I have had this book in my reference/design library for nearly 40 years and it has never let me down. Whether I wanted to find tiny elements or sweeping gestures to help push a design foreword, I've always found the inspiration I hoped for. In addition, it's just plain fun to browse through!About a zillion fantastic drawings make me think about the early archaeologists recording sights unimaginable to share with the rest of their world. Stone arches, iron gateways, tapestries, stained glass, furniture, it's all represented here.I highly recomment adding this collection to your collection ASAP!Don't forget to have fun! - Tod

Just when I thought I had run through all the informative books on Christmas history, I found this treasure. Details of the "old ways" of Christmas are tied in with images of postcards and other ephemera giving a colorful, quirky view of the season through the ages. Aww, the old days when wicked children were punished and good children given treats! Some of the images are positively unnerving, with devils and whips, and children being taken away for punishment! Some of those cards probably scared the heck out of the children of the time. The chapter on the portrayal of blacks on Christmas cards is both interesting and uncomfortable. No wonder so few of these cards are found!A wonderful addition to any library, whether fun or serious. Great images, concise history, and lots of little known details. Worth every penny!

It's a very interesting read. Not long on text, the book consists mostly of reproductions from Victorian postcards that give a snapshot of various periods in the history of Christmas. Due to the nature of postcard printing (and the author's collection), the focus is primarily that of northern Europe and America; there's little of the Southern European "Nativity" tradition represented here, but it's still a fascinating look into the collective psyche of a holiday. My only quibble is the book's relatively small dimensions (about 8" by 8" square); it would have benefited from a much larger scale to be a proper coffee table book.

I like to learn about weird or odd things. I also like history. This is a nice little book about odd Christmases long ago. It has postcards of creatures like the Krampus or the Belschnickel. It explains what came from Europe and when it came and where it went. It was filled with all sorts of weirdness and pictures which I love. A great book indeed.

Goes where most Christmas books don't go. Some of the stuff might be a little overdone to make it interesting and strange but it is well worth reading and has added little known facts to my various Christmas History presentations I do before clubs and groups.

I have been an antique postcard collector for 25 years and am delighted with the Christmas post card and trade card images in this book. This would be an ideal gift for anyone who loves Christmas and/or who enjoys learning about holiday traditions. The book reflects a lot of research and provides rare images of the Christmas season in a form that is eclectic and beautiful. I'm so delighted with this and may be back for other copies to give as gifts. Thanks!

Great historical insights into traditions. A nice 'chaser' after some of the more saccharine ads and programs. ;)

Great book....love the Kampus info and other fun unusual info on historical Xmas.

Received quickly and properly as described

Been in business over 8 years. Learned a few new deductions that will save a lot of money as well as a much better understanding of tax deductions overall. This book should be part of a 'mandatory starter package' for any new business owner. It obviously isn't and never will be because it would not benefit the IRS but sure would have been nice to know some of this stuff years ago!

This was a very comprehensive book. I certainly know and understand more about the topic. However, a lot of repetitive information made the book boring and sometimes uninteresting...then again, it's a book about taxes.

Good read

Concise. Informative. Easy to read.

I would buy this book every year it comes out.

Just ok. Much better options out there....

Excellent reference book, for people who need guidance.

Review

"Ken Binmore is an outstanding exponent of game theory. His many books are written in a delightfully fresh and engaging style, as is this one. Enjoy!"--Robert Aumann, Center for the Study of Rationality, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences, 2005"Delightfully written and thoroughly revised, this long-awaited intellectual child of Ken Binmore's Fun and Games retains the solid foundation of the original while expanding to cover an impressive array of new ideas. It stands out among game theory texts in explaining not only how to do game theory, but when and why to do it. It is the ideal place to learn game theory for the first time or to gain a fresh perspective on ideas that a career's work have made familiar." --Larry Samuelson, University of Wisconsin"One of the world's leading game theorists explains the subject with sparkle and wit. He challenges the reader to think deeply about strategic rationality without becoming esoteric, and shows how the theory illuminates down-to-earth topics like gambling, auctions, business competition, and game show contests. A gem of a book written by a master." --Peyton Young, Scott and Barbara Black Professor of Economics, Johns Hopkins University, and Professor of Economics, University of Oxford

I recall reading the earlier edition of this book (even though the author insists that this book is too different to be a second edition) in a game theory class in college. This book seems to be an improvement to me, though my recollections of the first book are a bit poor. The author claims that more important topics are discussed in greater detail, while less important topics are omitted entirely. This seems like it might be true. The book also seems to be reorganized. All I care about is that it has everything I need for the project I'm working on. It also has a bunch of other stuff that I don't care about. I recommend skipping parts of the book that are useless to you. Most of the exercises are interesting, and you can find the answers on the internet (not in the back of the back). There is one glaring problem with this book: there's so many typos. I'm pretty sure the typos from the first edition are still in there. There's one typo in particular that I recognize. There's also some repetition in the book, but not enough to be annoying. What usually happens is that a topic will be given a brief overview and then used in one section but then explained in fair more detail in a later part of the book. This seems unnecessary to me, but there's not so much of this.

Ken Binmore is the broadest thinker working within the classical game theory tradition. Unlike most technicians, he has read widely in philosophy, history, and anthropology, combining a passion for analytical detail with a deep feeling for the broad strokes of human behavior. These characteristics are reflected in this textbook on game theory, which is light-years more sophisticated than the standard fare, yet never sacrifices clarity or expositional elegance on the alter of mathematical or notational rigor. While I would urge anyone who is not math phobic and can recall a bit of high school algebra to tackle this book as an introduction to game theory, I am afraid it will not be widely used in courses because most instructors simply will not have the personal intellectual resources to teach this material. This is because Binmore tackles some of the deepest issues in game theory, whereas most instructors will have had the standard graduate course in which these issues are totally ignored. Moreover, in the interest of clarity, Binmore does not supply the full analytical frameworks in which these deep issues are normally cast, so the instructor will have few resources to deal with the material in a classroom setting. On the other hand, each chapter has plenty of problems that an instructor could use to illuminate the text, say by assigning half to the students and solving some of the remaining problems in class.Like every textbook writer before him, Binmore treats the Nash equilibrium with great reverence as a solution concept. I consider this a significant error, but at least Binmore tries to explain why (p. 18-19). His answer is sufficiently weak that the critical reader might decide to explore the issue himself. Binmore does not present a set of sufficient conditions under which agents will play a Nash equilibrium (for instance, as presented in the famous paper by Aumann and Brandenburger, 1995). Had he done that, the student might have a better idea of why the Nash equilibrium criterion is of limited value. Binmore's defense of the Nash concept draws on evolutionary game theory, but a notable absence from the book is a treatment of evolutionary game theory. A possible reason for this omission is that the math involved is fairly advanced (dynamical systems theory), but there are versions that avoid these technicalities for beginners (evolutionary stable strategies and stochastic dynamical systems a la Thomas Schelling, Robert Axtell, and Peyton Young).Among the refreshing positions taken by Binmore in this text is that equilibrium refinements are generally not worth much, except for subgame perfection, and even that is highly suspect except in special situations. Whereas backward induction (a.k.a. finding subgame perfect equilibria) is treated with great reverence in most text books, the technique has been under constant attack theoretically, and it is well known that individuals generally do not use more than a few rounds of backward induction. Binmore actually presents "The Surprise Test" (pp. 45-46) which I believe reveals the deepest contradictions of backward induction, although Binmore believes that the example shows nothing and has a simple non-paradoxical resolution. I believe he is wrong. Binmore's answer is that the teacher makes two statements (you will be tested on day next week, and when the test occurs, you will be surprised). Backward induction shows that the teacher's statement is false, but the student is mistaken by inferring that he will not be tested, since it could be the other half of the teacher's statement that is false. However, in fact, the test is given on Monday, and the student is surprised. So, the teacher was correct, contrary to the backward induction reasoning. Binmore is wrong, because the student was indeed surprised.Binmore does not particularly care for the concept of rationalizability (it isn't mentioned until p. 424) because it assumes nothing but Bayesian rationality with arbitrary priors. I think this is an error, because it leads him away from an investigation of when even rationalizability is violated. Thus, on p. 153, he confidently asserts "a rational player will never use a strongly dominated strategy." Yet, there are many games of strategic complementarity (e.g., Carlsson and van Damme, 1993), not to mention Basu's Traveler's Dilemma, in which the iterated elimination of strong dominated strategies leads to a unique Nash equilibrium that no collection of reasonable players would ever play. Binmore presents Basu's game in the problems on p. 174, and shows that if players don't care about small amounts of money, there is a plausible Nash equilibrium. This is an interesting idea that is pursued in different ways throughout the book, but is not systematically developed. One of the most embarrassing questions for classical game theory is why anyone would ever play a mixed strategy in a one-shot game. There are a couple of important attempts at answering this in the literature, and Binmore presents them uncritically. This is uncharacteristic of him. The attempt to define an equilibrium in "conjectures" solves the problem, but says nothing about how people actually play. Binmore presents the usual example of the plausibility of this approach, which uses Throwing Pennies, in which each player "conjectures" the other will use heads or tails with equal probability. But, what if the equilibrium probabilities are 99/100 and 1/100? Why shouldn't the players still play 1/2 and 1/2, in fact? The alternative, Harsanyi's purification theorem (p. 445) deals with this issue better, but it has its own serious limitations, which Binmore does not mention.Binmore's chapter on game theory and ethics is a gem, and his put-down of Kant in the introductory paragraph is just choice. Since Binmore has written at least three books on this subject, I would have expected more, but this book gives a foundational treatment. Binmore is a noted critique of behavioral economics, which he takes as being an enemy of game theory. However, behavioral economics is bare mentioned in this text, and never in a disparaging way. I think one of the major contributions of game theory is to the methodology of empirical economics, but this aspect of classical game theory is slighted in Binmore's text. There is much excellent material in this book that I have not had the space to mention, including bargaining and auctions, to which Binmore has personally contributed so much. This book is way beyond virtually all others in exposing the reader to the nitty-gritty issues of classical game theory. Whether that speaks for or against it's being a commercial success remains to be seen.

As the author of an excellent and innovative text on game theory (Game Theory Evolving, Princeton University Press), Herbert Gintis is far better qualified than this reviewer to provide a substantive evaluation of Ken Binmore's new book; I encourage all prospective buyers to read Gintis' comprehensive review very carefully.I would, however, like to offer some additional information for the specific audience of mathematicians and students of mathematics who are searching for an introductory text on game theory.Ken Binmore studied mathematics before becoming an economist; thus, one might expect that this book would provide rigorous proofs for all the results used, and mathematically inclined readers will be happy to hear that this is indeed the case. The intended readership is quite broad, however, and so Binmore ensured that it is possible for those who are inclined to skip the proofs to do so without suffering serious loss of continuity. In determining whether this text is appropriate for one's specific study or instructional needs, one encounters two problems: (1) the table of contents is not available on Amazon, and (2) even when the chapter titles are made available, they are written in somewhat whimsical language that makes it difficult to determine precisely how the book is organized and precisely what it contains. In order to provide a bit of help in this area, I have provided the prospective buyer with both the chapter titles AND the section headings at the end of this review; I sincerely hope this helps in the process of determining whether this book represents a worthwhile investment, based on the specific needs of the buyer. One cautionary note for university instructors, especially instructors of mathematics; in the Preface, Binmore states that his book contains enough material for at least two courses in game theory. He writes"I have tried to make things easy for teachers who want to design a course based on selection of topics from the whole book by including marginal notes to facilitate skipping."Thus, the instructor who is used to "possible course" charts, showing clear interdependence of chapters and identifying sections that might be skipped without penalty, will not find them in this book. The inclusion of this material would definitely have been a great kindness to university instructors; scouting one's way through this 639-page text to find a realistic and effective one-semester course is not easy!Table of Contents1 Getting Locked In1.1 What is Game Theory?1.2 Toy Games1.3 The Prisoners' Dilemma1.4 Private Provision of Public Goods1.5 Imperfect Competition1.6 Nash Equilibrium1.7 Collective Rationality1.8 Repeating the Prisoners' Dilemma1.9 Which Equilibrium?1.10 Social Dilemmas1.11 Roundup2 Backing Up2.1 Where Next?2.2 Win-Or-Lose Games2.3 The Rules of the Game2.4 Pure Strategies2.5 Backward Induction2.6 Solving NIM2.7 Hex2.8 Chess2.9 Rational Play?2.10 Roundup3 Taking Chances3.1 Chance Moves3.2 Probability3.3 Conditional Probability3.4 Lotteries3.5 Expectation3.6 Values of Games with Chance Moves3.7 Waiting Games3.8 Parcheesi3.9 Roundup4 Accounting for Tastes4.1 Payoffs4.2 Revealed Preference4.3 Utility Functions4.4 Dicing with Death4.5 Making Risky Choices4.6 Utility Scales4.7 Dicing with Death Again4.8 When are People Consistent?4.9 Roundup5 Planning Ahead5.1 Strategic Forms5.2 Payoff Functions5.3 Matrices and Vectors5.4 Domination5.5 Credibility and Commitment5.6 Living in an Imperfect World5.7 Roundup6 Mixing Things Up6.1 Mixed Strategies6.2 Reaction Curves6.3 Interpreting Mixed Strategies6.4 Payoffs and Mixed Strategies6.5 Convexity6.6 Payoff Regions6.7 Roundup7 Fighting it Out7.1 Strictly Competitive Games7.2 Zero-Sum Games7.3 Minimax and Maximin7.4 Safety First7.5 Solving Zero-Sum Games7.6 Linear Programming7.7 Separating Hyperplanes7.8 Starships7.9 Roundup8 Keeping Your Balance8.1 Introduction8.2 Dueling Again8.3 When do Nash Equilibria Exist?8.4 Hexing Brouwer8.5 The Equilibrium Selection Problem8.6 Conventions8.7 Roundup9 Buying Cheap9.1 Economic Models9.2 Partial Derivatives9.3 Preferences in Commodity Spaces9.4 Trade9.5 Monopoly9.6 Perfect Competition9.7 Consumer Surplus9.8 Roundup10 Selling Dear10.1 Models of Imperfect Competition10.2 Cournot Models10.3 Stackelberg Models10.4 Bertrand Models10.5 Edgeworth Models10.6 Roundup11 Repeating Yourself11.1 Reciprocity11.2 Repeating a Zero-Sum Game11.3 Repeating the Prisoners' Dilemma11.4 Infinite Repetitions11.5 Social Contract11.6 The Evolution of Cooperation11.7 Roundup12 Getting the Message12.1 Knowledge and Belief12.2 Dirty Faces12.3 Knowledge12.4 Possibility Sets12.5 Information Sets12.6 Common Knowledge12.7 Complete Information12.8 Agreeing to Disagree?12.9 Coordinated Action12.10 Roundup13 Keeping Up to Date13.1 Rationality13.2 Bayesian Updating13.3 Bayesian Rationality13.4 Getting the Model Right13.5 Scientific Induction?13.6 Constructing Priors13.7 Bayesian Rationality in Games13.8 Roundup14 Seeking Refinement14.1 Contemplating the Impossible14.2 Counterfactual Reasoning14.3 Backward and Imperfect14.4 Gang of Four14.5 Signaling Games14.6 Rationalizability14.7 Roundup15 Knowing What to Believe15.1 Complete Information15.2 Bluffing15.3 Incomplete Information15.4 Russian Roulette15.5 Duopoly with Incomplete Information15.6 Purification15.7 Incomplete Information about Rules15.8 Roundup16 Getting Together16.1 Bargaining16.2 Cooperative Game Theory16.3 Cooperative Payoff Regions16.4 Nash Bargaining Problems16.5 Supporting Hyperplanes16.6 Nash Bargaining Solution16.7 Collusion in a Cournot Duopoly16.8 Incomplete Information16.9 Other Bargaining Solutions16.10 Roundup17 Cutting a Deal17.1 Noncooperative Bargaining Models17.2 The Nash Program17.3 Commitment in Bargaining17.4 Nash Threat Games17.5 Bargaining Without Commitment17.6 Going Wrong17.7 Roundup18 Teaming Up18.1 Coalitions18.2 Coalitional Form18.3 Core18.4 Stable Sets18.5 Shapley Value18.6 Applying the Nash Program18.7 Roundup19 Just Playing?19.1 Ethics and Game Theory19.2 Do People Play Fair?19.3 Social Choice Paradoxes19.4 Welfare Functions19.5 Impersonal Comparison of Utility19.6 More Bargaining Solutions19.7 Political Philosophy19.8 Which Fairness Norm?19.9 Roundup20 Taking Charge20.1 Mechanism Design20.2 Principals and Agents20.3 Commitment and Contracting20.4 Revelation Principle20.5 Providing a Public Good20.6 Implementation Theory20.7 Roundup21 Going, Going, Gone!21.1 Telecom Auctions21.2 Types of Auctions21.3 Continuous Random Variables21.4 Shading Your Bid21.5 Designing Optimal Auctions21.6 Common-Value Auctions21.7 Multiunit Auctions21.8 The Chopstick Auction21.9 Roundup

Read for school. Interesting read though

The book is in perfect condition with the exception of the fact that the binding was put on backwards. Thus, when you open the front cover, you're looking at the back of the very last page in the book. The pages are thus, upside down and backwards.

The recorded attacks of Max Brooks Zombie Survival Guide, is a fun comic addition to the original works of World War Z and The Zombie Survival Guide, that shows a vivid drawings of images from these books with selected segments of the books. I enjoyed the book and hope more people read and enjoy.

Simply put, this is the graphic rendition of the stories Max Brooks put in the back of his Zombie Survival Guide. The artwork is good and the stories were entertaining when I first read them a few years back. It had been a while so it was nice to revisit these very brief tales but the negative is that Brooks didn't try to add any new stories to the mix and give us something different than we have already seen. It was entertaining, but not sure it was worth the price charged. You can get fresh new zombie stuff in graphic novel form on an ongoing basis with the Walking Dead series, amongst others, so why couldn't Brooks done a bit of refreshing here and added a few other interesting tales throughout history?Still, the quality of the art work is good and if you have not read the recorded attacks from the Survival Guide already, this is a good way to introduce them to you if you are a fan of zombies.

Diverting, but not worth the money. Basically you are paying a graphic novel price for the equivalent of a single comic book.

This was a gift for my boyfriend who is a die hard zombie fan (me, not so much). But I read this before I gave it to him at Christmas and even I was picking it up more than once. He's already started to wear down the spine with how much he reads it. This book chronicles "zombie attacks" starting at the stone age with the first humans, to Rome and Cossack Russia. It goes all over the world through every major time period, even including major events such as a World War finally ending in modern America. The art is amazing and the story fascinating.

Wonderfully entertaining. A bit disturbing how much thought must have gone into the writing of it. Read this after World War Z (before the movie) and was more than satisfied. Not a real intellectual piece, but great for flights. Makes for entertaining conversation with whoever interrupts your reading to ask "What are you reading?" Get a couple of funny looks, but it seems the Zombie Apocolypse culture is spreading.

Downloaded the sample for Kindle, thought the stories and graphics were awesome! Decided to purchase and got excerpts from books I've already purchased. Pretty disappointing. 2 stars for the free sample tease. Don't bother purchasing.

Great book, I read it on deployment and then passed it around so others could read it as well.

My brother basically thanked me and I haven't heard from in since! LOL! That was a few weeks ago! Thank You because my brother had a gleam of happiness that I haven't seen! These books gave him just that!!

[This review also appears on Andi's Young Adult Books.]It's the Summer of 2012, which means it is time for the Summer Olympics in London, England. This athletic tradition has deeper roots than some kids can imagine. A Passion for Victory seeks to tell the story of that tradition, starting with the Ancient Greeks through the early modern era.It opens with a chronology that highlights major events. The first story is about a man who survived the icy waters after the Titanic sank and went on to be an Olympic champion. The timing of that story is also notable because 2012 marks the 100 year-anniversary of the Titanic sinking. The first two chapters go into a lot of detail about the original Olympic games that took place in Ancient Greece. It compares those games to the modern ones. The next several chapters focus on the revival of the modern Olympic games in the 1800s, particularly the first 100 years. The epilogue focuses on the Olympics around WWII and includes several photographs. An appendix features lists of medal records won from 1896 to 1948.This book reads very much like a textbook and isn't as engaging as others I have read. The language used is more appropriate for older readers, which is why I have it classified as young adult and not so much as a chapter book. Also, discussions of Hitler and political topics are more appropriate for older students. These aspects of the Olympics are not as often discussed when talking about the topic. I did also notice much more discussion of women in the politics, as well. It is full of lots of information and resources for further study.I received a complimentary eARC in exchange for my honest review.
