The two popular translations of ‘Crime and Punishment’ before the 1993 translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, were by Constance Garnett and David McDuff. The Pevear/Volokhonsky translation became my favourite – until Oliver Ready’s translation came along. Not knowing a word of Russian, I declare my favourite only by the enjoyment I derived from reading the book in English.Many things may indeed be lost in translation, and many others get misrepresented but we may not know. The result of reading only the English versions is that one’s choice is largely subjective. Compared to the Garnett version, the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation seems very modern – until Ready’s came along. Little things like changing ‘had not’ to ‘hadn’t’ renders Ready’s version not only a little more modern but also more informal. That is not to say that the atmosphere of old Russia is lost. Ready uses ‘fibs’ for ‘lies’ (Pevear/Volokhonsky) in one passage.Ultimately, the reader has to decide for himself which style he enjoys more. Here is a comparison from one of my favourite passages (there are many) from the book. I set out first the Pevear/Volokhonsky version then the Ready version:“What do you think?” Razmumikhin shouted, raising his voice even more. “You think it’s because they’re lying? Nonsense! I like it when people lie! Lying is man’s only privilege over all other organisms. If you lie- you get to the truth! Lying is what makes me a man. Not one truth has ever been reached without lying fourteen times or so, maybe a hundred and fourteen, and that’s honourable in its way; well, but we can’t even lie with our minds! Lie to me, but in your own way, and I’ll kiss you for it. Lying in one’s own way is almost better than telling the truth in someone else’s way; in the first case you’re a man, and in the second – no better than a bird. The truth won’t go away, but life can be nailed shut; there are examples. (Pevear/Volokhonsky)‘Now what are you thinking?’ cried Razumikhin, raising even more. ‘That it’s their lies I can’t stand? Nonsense! I like it when people lie. Telling lies is humanity’s sole privilege over other organism. Keep fibbing and you’ll end up with the truth! I’m only human because I lie. No truth’s ever been discovered without fourteen fibs along the way, if not one hundred and fourteen, and there’s honour in that. But our lies aren’t even our own! After all, lies of your own are almost better than someone else’s truth: in the first case you’re human; in the second you’re just a bird! The truth won’t run away, but life just might – wouldn’t be the first time.Ready’s version has a table of chronological events and a fresh, inspiring introduction that will help the first-time reader understand and appreciate the context of ‘Crime and Punishment’

This is Dostoyevski at his best - at least as far as this reader is concerned. This is a ‘complex’ story (in many respects) certainly with respect to the storyline: and, in the ‘typical’ Russian style, full of boiling emotion, honor, degradation and mystery. Rodion Romanovitch Raskolnikov, a young college drop-out, given to dark mood and brooding temperament sulks in his cramped, stuffy, oppressive little boarding house room and plans a murder. He has earlier published a pseudo-intellectual essay in which he postulates the ‘right’ of an ‘extraordinary’ person to even commit crime in the pursuit of a greater good. This ‘philosophy’ shared with the reader seems always in one way or another at the base of Rodion Romanovitch’s brooding conclusion: “Yes, that’s what it was! I wanted to become a Napoleon, that is why I killed her. . . . Do you understand now?”“I saw clear as daylight how strange it is that not a single person living in this mad world has had the daring to go straight for it all and send it flying to the devil! I . . . I wanted to have the daring . . . and I killed her. I only wanted to have the daring, Sonia! That was the whole cause of it!”The storyline twists and turns and interleaves a series of characters that include the pathetic, the deceitful, the honorable, and the utterly hopeless. Dostoyevski makes the depth of the read much greater than the storyline itself, however. Raskolnikov is positively tortured within his own mind by the plan for murder, by the murder itself and by his pursuit by the predatory Investigating lawyer - Porfiry Petrovich. The writing amazes with its precision in describing the ebb and flood of emotion, scheming and shame that torment Raskolnikov. And, as usual in his novels, Dostoyevski explores the philosophical implications of good and bad, afterlife or darkness, and human consequence related to an interconnected universe. An old-fashioned Epilog ends the read giving the reader some 'closure' on Rodion and some moral 'conclusion' for Dostoyevski. I had to order this textbook in addition to another textbook for a low level audio class in a film program. I am not familiar with sound at all and since this is something that is set up where you complete lessons as you read the book, I thought that this would give me a great deal of hands on experience and hoped that I would be efficient in an audio program after reading and using this book. There were quite a few terms and techniques in the book that catered to students with a background in audio. Since I was not familiar with a lot of the terminology, I had to get a great deal of extra help from my professor. I suggest that if you don't already have a fundamental knowledge of audio but want to learn in a hands on way, you should purchase supplemental reading material so that you truly gain a good understanding from this book.

I liked the fact that the basics of the Audition interface, commands, and controls and explained. Chapter 4 is a bit longer than necessary as the book steps you through EVERY audio effect. Though this is useful, I would recommend perusing it to learn what each effect does then coming back to it later when you need to use that effect. Finally, many acoustical terms (like RMS and harmonics) are used with little or no definition. I am assuming that the authors feel that the readers should already have a grounding in acoustical theory, which is generally not the case for people approaching Audition from the perspective of someone with a background in film or video. Jay Rose's book on Production and Post Production sound (while quite dense for the uninitiated) is a great primer for this book. Finally I get the distinct feeling that this book only scratches the surface of what is capable with Audition. More practical exercises should have been included with explanations of how the lesson applies to scenarios you are likely to encounter in the real world of post production sound.

This was an excellent overview of Audition. When I started I didn't know much about manipulating audio. Just what I'd learned from Audacity tutorials. This book and switching to Audition has completely changed my process of podcast production for the better and made the job so much easier. If you need to get up to speed on using Audition or working with audio this is the book for you.

Like the others in the Classroom in a Book series, this is encyclopedic and very useful in getting to the bottom of the many features of Audition CC, including some that are pretty obscure unless you're a trained sound engineer to begin with.

Adobe makes software, software for creating publications. Why on earth can't they put decent illustrations in a book their creative team creates? The new Adobe dark interface shows up particularly poorly in illustrations which are small and seem to be low resolution screen shots. The index drops to 8 point font. This was a relatively expensive book, surely they could have spent a little more on paper. But it is nice paper and the margins are wide. I like to annotate my books with notes and highlighting - lots of space and no bleed through, I love it. I'll have more to say when I've completed the book.

That's not the fault of the authors; this program, like so many of the Adobe CC programs is so feature rich that the book would probably grow to an unmanageable size and probably cost as well. About the AuthorsSheila and Jane have been colleagues and friends for… well, let’s just say a long time. As English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers, they worked together on lots of projects… and had lots of fun as they worked. A partnership was born! Together, Jane and Sheila have teaching credentials in several states and two continents. With years and years… and years… of experience (they just don’t want to count them all, ha!), they have taught ESL to little kids, big kids, university students, adults, company executives, and other teachers in the U.S. and Europe (both online and in regular classroom settings). Both Sheila and Jane have served as members of the New Jersey Department of Education Advisory Committee for ESL/Bilingual Education. They’ve facilitated online ESL training courses for teachers through the NJ DOE professional development program. Sheila has held several leadership positions scoring teacher candidate responses for an international testing company, and Jane has written ESL test questions and rated English as a Foreign Language exams for another internationally recognized testing company. (They teach, they test, they score!) They have won many awards for excellence in teaching, including two Teacher of the Year awards, and corporate citations for excellence. They’ve given numerous presentations and have written curriculum and syllabi for diverse ESL populations. It is like a vocabulary work book. I expect this book as good as "English The American Way" which has many dialogues(listening and speaking parts). The contents are boring not much supports from research just definitions of words and personal narrations about its own topics. The audio track is also boring because the introduction voice is boring, and also not much dynamics. It should change the title to appropriate one not "Celebrate The American Way".

I teach ESL to private students through a relocation company, and my student loves this book and the other one we're using, English the American Way: A Fun ESL Guide to Language & Culture in the U.S. w/Audio CD & MP3 (English as a Second Language Series)I recommend both books!

I received the book ahead of time. This is one if the best ESL books I've bought, the content is easy to understand and well distributed, lectures are interesting, and the most important its a very powerful tool for non ESL students!

This book can help you talk like a human being. It's easy to read and taught me a lot of REAL everyday English! I love this series so much! Hope to see more works from the two lovely authors!

This textbook is fantastic! There is a good mixture of cultural readings, idioms, and vocabulary which connects directly to contemporary American culture.

This book is wonderful for teaching ESL to students who already know English but want more practice and to know more about America. I prefer the way English the American Way is written with vocabulary words throughout the lesson and not all at the end.

A remarkably clever, intelligent, and engaging guide for the ESL student. Should be on the shelf with its equally valuable predecessor volume. Highly recommended for both ESL programs and the individual student.

This is barely more than a pamphlet, about 20 pages. There is also very little usable information. Very general statements like "You should learn how to cook." Was expecting a lot more, like how to fish in different areas, clean and prepare. Suggested meals, how to eat healthy with minimal refrigeration, how to stow to maximize space. Thought there would be pictures of interiors of Cats and different ways to organize. There's not a single picture. No real usable safety or shelter info. No real details about concerns of different areas where piracy is prevalent nor any strategies. This author has made me consider if I should go into the business of righting overly simplistic and general pamphlets with not much more than opinions on how fun it is to be on a boat and sell them as "Books."

This isn't really worth even the low price paid. Nothing elaborates on catamarans in particular; just general things about living aboard which would apply to any boat. And an intelligent Google search would get you pretty much everything this book has to offer.Money better spent? Get Gavin leSueur's books....

Absolutely nothing of any practical use. Just an appeal to turn tree-huger vegan. I mean really bad and the whole book read in 15 minutes. Unfortunately I can't give it negative stars.. I don't think I've ever read a book (before this) that left me feeling mugged.

What a ripoff. Not much money but a total waste of fifteen minutes. Too general "you need food and water" . Not what I was looking for.

Kinda disappointed as to the content was literally a 20-30 minute read. Not much substance, nor value.

Waste of a dollar - totally inadequate in every way. Disappointed!

Very thorough history of a military unit which deserves to be more widely known. Writing is not technical instead very very readable...

The story of the illustrious 31st Infantry Regiment has finally been told in a well written and very engaging manner in one compendium. This book tells the 102 year story of a infantry unit unlike any other in the US Army, and in doing so, it brings to light important aspects, many of which have been forgotten, of the nation's history.Constituted in 1916, the 31st was primarily based in the Philippines and was initially involved in little remembered conflicts, fighting Bolsheviks, White Russians in Siberia and protecting the International Settlement in Shanghai. With the Japanese attack and the outbreak of WWII, the unit, stationed in Manila, was in the bloody mix from Day One until war's end, fighting heroically in the Battle of Bataan, and then undergoing the Bataan Death March, followed by 3 and half more years of privation and depravity in Japanese POW camps, Hell Ships and as "worker ants" of the Imperial Emperor and Japanese Industrialists. No other US Army infantry unit suffered during the war as much as did the 31st. I can go on and on about 31st's accomplishments, but suffice to say that it has been in the thick of things in America's conflicts such as Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afganistan since General MacArthur re-constituted it in 1946, all of which is clearly recounted in this compilation.While the glory and attention is often given other units, much of the hard fighting was actually done by the 31st without fanfare. This volume does us a service by telling "the rest of the story". It is not overly technical, without ignoring tactics and details, and can be read and enjoyed by the layman and the military history buff alike. I found this book enjoyable, engrossing and challenging. The numerous and well selected photos are important additions.In summary, "The 31st Infantry Regiment: A History of American's Foreign Legion in Peace and War" is a long overdue, well-written and -constructed volume that I highly recommend.

Great edition to the written history of the U.S. Army! Fundamentally this books highlights the frontline Soldiers view of American military history for a 100 year span. Generally, units are studied though specific conflicts and eras, but what this books provides is a view of a single U.S. Army Regiment’s service over a hundred year period. From little known expeditions like those at the early part of the 20th century in Siberia and Shanghai to the major combat of the early Second World War, Korea and Vietnam and on into the modern battlefields of 21st century in Afghanistan and Iraq of today, the 31st Infantry Regiment has experience them all. This book captures the breath and depth of the role U.S. Army infantrymen have been asked to fill over the years. Although we at times think humanitarian assistance in conflict zones or training of indigenous forces is a new role, this history illustrates how the U.S. Army has been doing this for over 100 years. The concentration on a single regiment, the 31st Infantry Regiment provides a meaningful way to see how the role of the U.S. Army was implemented through the years and various organizational changes, while also providing a personal and readable history. I commend the authors on capturing the history of this unique regiment, while also providing a readable history of the American Soldier.

I read the storied history of this great Regiment with the perspective of a retired career Army officer. I have served or crossed paths with several of the authors and contributors, including General Barry McCaffrey, who wrote the Foreword. The Afterword author, General Stephen Townsend, has played an enormous role in the current development of the Regiment. The contributions of these senior officers were enhanced by the painstaking work of soldier-scholars Karl Lowe, Jim Simms and Grady Smith. Of special interest was the section devoted to Vietnam and Cambodia, progressing into the current 10th Mountain Division Era. These authors lived the history of the Regiment, slogging through the jungles and rice paddies of Vietnam—a dynamic part of the unit’s history. The background of the authors as combat leaders lends fidelity and credibility to the publication. They were able to portray the history, development and gallantry of the Regiment from a small unit leader’s viewpoint against a backdrop of global strategy. The technique of recording this history through the eyes of such gallant warriors enhances the rich history of the unit.
