The cutesy alliteration and rhyme ("The Goal Is More Important than the Role") and the tired sports metaphors ("The Scoreboard Is Essential to Winning") are uninspired and uninspiring. Maxwell is enamored of his laws, but the sense that radiates from the pages of this book is that he is also enamored of himself; even the acknowledgements lack humility, as he thanks one assistant for "extend[ing] my influence around the world." He is perhaps to be commended for writing a book that will be accessible to the broadest possible audience. The occasional example features folks driving home from church but, despite the connection to Thomas Nelson, little of Maxwell's message is specifically Christian. Hindus, atheists and Shintos seeking leadership tips will be able to read this as comfortably as Baptists. Then again, perhaps providing flavorless counsel to a large, ecumenical audience is not an accomplishment worthy of applause. I listen to a lot of audio books. I started this self kick on trying to better myself this past year. This book along with his 17 Essential Qualities of a Team Player help me to get a promotion and changed my viewpoint on my whole work life. I highly recommend it and have even recommended it to my coworkers and even my boss has read it.

When I first started this book I had recently finished The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, also by Maxwell. I thoroughly enjoyed The 21. When I started The 17 I immediately thought that this book was just a regurgitation of The 21 and that Maxwell was going to milk the series for all its worth.In looking back I still find the first few sections light and common sense. But I hung in there and I'm glad I did. There are section later that challenged my thinking and the way I lead my team.I'm personally not a fan of all the sports references and all the talking about his own organization that Maxwell does, but points are well made. Not all the how-tos and details of team is given, but most sections are great springboards or foundations to get you moving in the right direction.For example, now I feel like I know where I need to go for more resources, what questions to ask, what first steps to take to enrich my team. No, this book isn't the end-all and be-all of everything team, but it can provide a new environment in your mind for how you approach teams.So, I was enriched by this book and have recommended it to friends already. I will also reference it in the future and the notes and highlights that I wrote in it.

I always enjoy reading books by John C. Maxwell. This book was not a disappointment at all. I was asked to do a team building seminar for a church leadership weekend and found the principles within "The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork..." extremely insightful and beneficial. Everyone left with renewed strength and a determination to fork more faithfully with one another and their pastor.I highly recommend this book for leaders everywhere, but since my context is church, it is definitely a must read for pastors and ministry leaders to share and discuss with their teams.

I cite this book often in my metrics courses, specifically for its eloquent description of applying the GQM Goal-Question-Metric approach in the context of IT security. GQM is an excellent way to tease out and elaborate on the business objectives for IT security, leading to metrics with a genuine purpose and value other than someone's personal preferences. It runs out of steam when it comes to choosing between, shortlisting and selecting from the plethora of possible metrics that GQM generates ... but we picked up that very thread in PRAGMATIC Security Metrics: Applying Metametrics to Information Security.

I've been running a security program for over 10 years and once in a while a book or reference comes along that truly helps me in my work.Lance Hayden's "IT Security Metrics" is one of those. My expectations were not terribly high as I've found most other metrics materials quickly devolve into near academic debate fodder. Thankfully in being able to preview a sample on the Kindle I was sold pretty quickly.There is a prescriptive quality to the book that makes me stop as I'm reading to make notes and begin working on them. Despite his exhaustive academic background it seems Mr. Hayden also has a very solid real-world experience and blends the two in a way that I do not often see. Therein lays the value of this book in my opinion. Rather than simply telling us how to continue to slog through the daily barrage, or taking a highly ethereal, idealistic high ground position, this book describes in practical terms how we as security practitioners can systematically improve.More importantly Mr. Hayden puts this improvement process purely in the context of the business we are there to support. Far too often security authors seem indifferent to the business implications of the art that we practice.If you are looking for an A to Z checklist, this isn't for you. If you are an experienced IT security person then the methods and approach Lance Hayden suggests will take immediate root. It quite simply makes sense. There are some books that I have to force myself to pick up, this is one of those that I have to force myself to put down.My only suggestion to Mr. Hayden -- turn this into a workshop!

Solidly written and well present book for IT Professionals to convey the essentials and apply the practical framework of IT Security metrics to keep the eye on the ball in a quickly changing business and IT landscape. I loaned it to my team and other colleagues who gained a different appreciation of the value, effort and also individual responsibilities required to ensure an enterprises IT security.

It's a nice book for people that don't have a way to start identifing security. Usually the proplems that are listed on the book are caused by IT itself that don't understand the business and like to think they are the core of the company while they are just a middle manager area.If IT manager accept that they are there to assist business decisions and help to identify risk and business continuity issues instead of just claiming for more Money and support, it will be much easier to achieve the good metric.

Would have love to see something a bit more prescriptive with a companion selection of excel spreadsheets and pivot tables to present and track the metrics. Overall a worthwhile read, but with the scarcity of time, it could have been much more concise and garnered a highrr rating.

A great reference and how to implement a security metrics project or program. My first of several book exploring this area.It stands the test of time and is still used and re-read for sections when needed professionally.It delivers as promised.

In my search for a complete book on Information Security Metrics this was my third. I wish it was my first, it would have been the only one I needed, I couldn't put it down. Dr. Hayden's writing and messages are clear, well written, engaging, and downright USEFUL! Theory and Real world examples(from Cisco) are presented in a clear, engaging style. This book sits on my desk and I refer to it often as my Metrics program develops. If you need a book on this topic, this is THE ONE. Well Done!

The two popular translations of ‘Crime and Punishment’ before the 1993 translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, were by Constance Garnett and David McDuff. The Pevear/Volokhonsky translation became my favourite – until Oliver Ready’s translation came along. Not knowing a word of Russian, I declare my favourite only by the enjoyment I derived from reading the book in English.Many things may indeed be lost in translation, and many others get misrepresented but we may not know. The result of reading only the English versions is that one’s choice is largely subjective. Compared to the Garnett version, the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation seems very modern – until Ready’s came along. Little things like changing ‘had not’ to ‘hadn’t’ renders Ready’s version not only a little more modern but also more informal. That is not to say that the atmosphere of old Russia is lost. Ready uses ‘fibs’ for ‘lies’ (Pevear/Volokhonsky) in one passage.Ultimately, the reader has to decide for himself which style he enjoys more. Here is a comparison from one of my favourite passages (there are many) from the book. I set out first the Pevear/Volokhonsky version then the Ready version:“What do you think?” Razmumikhin shouted, raising his voice even more. “You think it’s because they’re lying? Nonsense! I like it when people lie! Lying is man’s only privilege over all other organisms. If you lie- you get to the truth! Lying is what makes me a man. Not one truth has ever been reached without lying fourteen times or so, maybe a hundred and fourteen, and that’s honourable in its way; well, but we can’t even lie with our minds! Lie to me, but in your own way, and I’ll kiss you for it. Lying in one’s own way is almost better than telling the truth in someone else’s way; in the first case you’re a man, and in the second – no better than a bird. The truth won’t go away, but life can be nailed shut; there are examples. (Pevear/Volokhonsky)‘Now what are you thinking?’ cried Razumikhin, raising even more. ‘That it’s their lies I can’t stand? Nonsense! I like it when people lie. Telling lies is humanity’s sole privilege over other organism. Keep fibbing and you’ll end up with the truth! I’m only human because I lie. This is Dostoyevski at his best - at least as far as this reader is concerned. This is a ‘complex’ story (in many respects) certainly with respect to the storyline: and, in the ‘typical’ Russian style, full of boiling emotion, honor, degradation and mystery. Rodion Romanovitch Raskolnikov, a young college drop-out, given to dark mood and brooding temperament sulks in his cramped, stuffy, oppressive little boarding house room and plans a murder. He has earlier published a pseudo-intellectual essay in which he postulates the ‘right’ of an ‘extraordinary’ person to even commit crime in the pursuit of a greater good. This ‘philosophy’ shared with the reader seems always in one way or another at the base of Rodion Romanovitch’s brooding conclusion: “Yes, that’s what it was! I wanted to become a Napoleon, that is why I killed her. . . . Do you understand now?”“I saw clear as daylight how strange it is that not a single person living in this mad world has had the daring to go straight for it all and send it flying to the devil! I . . . I wanted to have the daring . . . and I killed her. I only wanted to have the daring, Sonia! That was the whole cause of it!”The storyline twists and turns and interleaves a series of characters that include the pathetic, the deceitful, the honorable, and the utterly hopeless. Dostoyevski makes the depth of the read much greater than the storyline itself, however. Raskolnikov is positively tortured within his own mind by the plan for murder, by the murder itself and by his pursuit by the predatory Investigating lawyer - Porfiry Petrovich. The writing amazes with its precision in describing the ebb and flood of emotion, scheming and shame that torment Raskolnikov. And, as usual in his novels, Dostoyevski explores the philosophical implications of good and bad, afterlife or darkness, and human consequence related to an interconnected universe. An old-fashioned Epilog ends the read giving the reader some 'closure' on Rodion and some moral 'conclusion' for Dostoyevski. I had to order this textbook in addition to another textbook for a low level audio class in a film program. I am not familiar with sound at all and since this is something that is set up where you complete lessons as you read the book, I thought that this would give me a great deal of hands on experience and hoped that I would be efficient in an audio program after reading and using this book. There were quite a few terms and techniques in the book that catered to students with a background in audio. Since I was not familiar with a lot of the terminology, I had to get a great deal of extra help from my professor. I suggest that if you don't already have a fundamental knowledge of audio but want to learn in a hands on way, you should purchase supplemental reading material so that you truly gain a good understanding from this book.

I liked the fact that the basics of the Audition interface, commands, and controls and explained. Chapter 4 is a bit longer than necessary as the book steps you through EVERY audio effect. Though this is useful, I would recommend perusing it to learn what each effect does then coming back to it later when you need to use that effect. Finally, many acoustical terms (like RMS and harmonics) are used with little or no definition. I am assuming that the authors feel that the readers should already have a grounding in acoustical theory, which is generally not the case for people approaching Audition from the perspective of someone with a background in film or video. Jay Rose's book on Production and Post Production sound (while quite dense for the uninitiated) is a great primer for this book. Finally I get the distinct feeling that this book only scratches the surface of what is capable with Audition. More practical exercises should have been included with explanations of how the lesson applies to scenarios you are likely to encounter in the real world of post production sound.

This was an excellent overview of Audition. When I started I didn't know much about manipulating audio. Just what I'd learned from Audacity tutorials. This book and switching to Audition has completely changed my process of podcast production for the better and made the job so much easier. If you need to get up to speed on using Audition or working with audio this is the book for you.

Like the others in the Classroom in a Book series, this is encyclopedic and very useful in getting to the bottom of the many features of Audition CC, including some that are pretty obscure unless you're a trained sound engineer to begin with.

Adobe makes software, software for creating publications. Why on earth can't they put decent illustrations in a book their creative team creates? The new Adobe dark interface shows up particularly poorly in illustrations which are small and seem to be low resolution screen shots. The index drops to 8 point font. This was a relatively expensive book, surely they could have spent a little more on paper. But it is nice paper and the margins are wide. I like to annotate my books with notes and highlighting - lots of space and no bleed through, I love it. I'll have more to say when I've completed the book.

That's not the fault of the authors; this program, like so many of the Adobe CC programs is so feature rich that the book would probably grow to an unmanageable size and probably cost as well. About the AuthorsSheila and Jane have been colleagues and friends for… well, let’s just say a long time. As English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers, they worked together on lots of projects… and had lots of fun as they worked. A partnership was born! Together, Jane and Sheila have teaching credentials in several states and two continents. With years and years… and years… of experience (they just don’t want to count them all, ha!), they have taught ESL to little kids, big kids, university students, adults, company executives, and other teachers in the U.S. and Europe (both online and in regular classroom settings). Both Sheila and Jane have served as members of the New Jersey Department of Education Advisory Committee for ESL/Bilingual Education. They’ve facilitated online ESL training courses for teachers through the NJ DOE professional development program. Sheila has held several leadership positions scoring teacher candidate responses for an international testing company, and Jane has written ESL test questions and rated English as a Foreign Language exams for another internationally recognized testing company. (They teach, they test, they score!) They have won many awards for excellence in teaching, including two Teacher of the Year awards, and corporate citations for excellence. It is like a vocabulary work book. I expect this book as good as "English The American Way" which has many dialogues(listening and speaking parts). The contents are boring not much supports from research just definitions of words and personal narrations about its own topics. The audio track is also boring because the introduction voice is boring, and also not much dynamics. It should change the title to appropriate one not "Celebrate The American Way".

I teach ESL to private students through a relocation company, and my student loves this book and the other one we're using, English the American Way: A Fun ESL Guide to Language & Culture in the U.S. w/Audio CD & MP3 (English as a Second Language Series)I recommend both books!
