Hits what my A&P text misses. This book is much more thorough. Due to ADHD, I sometimes get psychological roadblock when I study a text, so it's nice to be able to mix things up and read the same subjects with a different view and more pics of cells than in my A&P book. The pics are awesome and very helpful. I wouldn't recommend it if you've never cracked open a bio or human bio book. It's got a ton of info, enough for a novice to get overwhelmed. I would have. I also recommend histology guide on the webs too. It's very handy and easy to use with this book. I would still recommend this book over the web alone because it explains what you're seeing in the guide better and in greater detail than my A&P book would. If I knew then what I know now, I could get away with this book and/or Costanzo's physiology and the internet for anatomy or a dedicated anatomy book(Netter's looks pretty good to me) for an undergrad A&P. My Marieb A&P book cost me 300. This plus Netter's 70 dollar Anatomy book and Costanzo's 45 dollar physiology is certainly doable, more thorough, and much cheaper.

This book is very well written, it is full of details, images and slides. The topics have clear and concise summaries that allow you to readily understand what the following section of text is about very well. All chapters I've read so far are clearly delimited. Mind you: I don't even speak english natively, but, in my opinion, this book is amazong, period. The fact it is deep and detailed should not discourage you. This book actually _saved_ me time, to the point I barely spend time studying histology yet having good grades. I manage to save time to apply to other (harder, IMHO) subjects like gross anatomy and biochemistry just by reading this book.Leagues ahead of Gartner or Junqueira and a must have, in my humble opinion. I can't thank the author enough for writing this.

Wow! I bought this book a couple of months ago, but just got around to opening it up last night to study for a histology test. I expected to find a slew of labelled photomicrographs to review, but this book is actually so much more! It is really an anatomy, physiology and histology text all in one - and it is done very very well. The book is divided into 24 chapters, with chapters by system, tissue type, basic cell biology as well as tissue/slide preparation. Each chapter covers the anatomy and physiology of the system or tissue in question extremely well. The text gets right to the point, but is still very complete in its explanations. Within each paragraph, key words are bolded in red, so you can quickly find the exact topic you are interested in within a subject. All topics are supplemented with fully labelled light and electron photomicrographs of each structure, tissue and cell. Illustrations also accompany a majority of the micrographs to clarify things. All illustrations and micrographs are thoroughly labelled. Within text pictures are typically 1/4 to 1/2 page in size, and each chapter has its own set of full-page color plates for even better up-close visualization and study. The full-page color photomicrographs at the end of each chapter are fully labelled, but go even further than that with exact descriptions of each label on the opposing page. This is really amazing, because, for instance, on a slide of the kidney that I was studying, not only were the proximal and distal tubules and collecting ducts labelled, there were also accompanying descriptions on the opposing page as to why one was different from another in these very similar looking structures. With labels alone I would have had a difficult time identifying these structures on my own slides, but with the added description accompanying each label as to why one was slightly different from another, I can now easily pick out the nuances of each that differentiate them.An added plus are the clinical correlations (several per chapter) as well as online access to the book with a special "scratch-off" code inside the front cover. I also like that chapters have a color strip and subject title (e.g. ovary) down the lateral margin of each page; this makes it extremely easy to find the section/topic you are looking for by simply thumbing the pages versus having to look in the table of contents to find the chapter/page for the system you are after.Note that the book does have a soft cover, so if you are going to be carrying it around with you, you'll want to put a plastic laminate on it to protect it. The pages themselves are all in full-color on high quality, semi-gloss stock. Total pages are 974 and the book itself is just a bit over 1 inch thick.Overall, this is a really an amazing book! You could definitely use it as a basic physiology text in addition to being your histology reference source and learning guide. There are so many features in this book that have been well thought out that the authors and publishers really should be applauded for -- the in-text bolding of key words, the subject strips down the side of each page for easy thumbing, but especially for the excellent photomicrographs, labelling and explanations of each cell type and structure. Well done and highly recommended! Worth far more than the sub-$100 price being charged!

Love this book! Would give 5 (vs 4) stars, but goodness takes time to read. In a way, of course, this just means the problem's entirely mine (should be faster, better reader). As it is, though, prefer more pictures, including lots of photos, various magnifications. In short, great text -diminished a star by my personal limitations.

This review is specifically for the *Kindle version.* It is HORRIBLY formatted; there are line breaks where there shouldn't be, no spaces were there should be, paragraph headings look like regular paragraph text, and navigating between a picture being discussed and the text is horrendous, in large part due to lack of links. For some reason, this book is missing features to explain what page of the printed book corresponds to what you are reading, making school-assigned sections rather difficult. As far as the context itself, it's pretty good. There are a number of things that could be clearer - I usually keep wikipedia in the background to quickly lookup key phrases. Incidentally, the authors know what phrases are important because they are all in bold, but not all of them are defined. Here is a good example of all of the above problems. (Phrases between *asterisks* are bolded in the text; otherwise the following is formatted exactly how it appears):The ANS is further subdivided into a *sympathetic division* and a *parasympathetic division*. A third division of ANS, the *enteric division* , serves the alimentary canal.Besides the problematic formatting, the book doesn't explain what sympathetic and parasympathetic are, despite putting both phrases in bold font to indicate their apparent importance in understanding histology.

This histology book presented information clearly and in a logical progression. The images are very helpful in identifying the structures in histological slides in the lab. The functions listed are also very helpful in understanding the physiological processes that happen within the different tissues and organ systems.

Useful for my class at great price

Five stars for the player and the subject matter. Three and a bit for the ghost writer, who is apparently an Arsenal supporter. There are a couple of inexplicable errors. For example, in the section on the World Cup Group, Costa Rica is described as a “tiny island.” Of course, it’s not an island at all. It’s located on the Central American isthmus, between Nicaragua and Panama, as one look at Google Maps could have told the author.Certain sections describing famous passages of play read as though the author has simply watched the clips on Youtube and attempted to describe them. He even includes sections of the television commentary. Even then, there are odd ambiguities. For example, in describing Gerrard’s famous goal against Olympiakos there is the following passage: “it was about to bounce again when, running at speed, I hit it on the half volley.” Isn’t a half volley hit right after the bounce when the ball is rising, as in tennis or cricket? Is this described as a half volley because the ball had already bounced, even though the ball was apparently coming down and thus was hit like a volley? Admittedly, this is a pedantic criticism, although Gerrard’s famous second goal in the 2006 FA Cup Final when the ball bounced twice is simply described as “I caught it on the rise.” Perhaps this goal then might have better been described as a true half volley in all senses of the term? It was certainly one of the greatest goals in history, but after watching it, it’s unclear to me whether it was, in fact, struck “on the rise.”More importantly, I found the tone to be slightly ill-judged. Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but I don’t see the need to include profanity, especially when many kids will likely read the book. It’s been while since I read the 2007 book, but my recollection of the difference can be summed up in contrasting anecdotes. The story in the earlier book about the garden fork and Gerrard’s toe was genuinely dramatic. The story in this book about Gerrard getting cut in a sensitive area away at Bournemouth and the playing the derby game with four stitches was overdone. It must have been a little tricky ghost writing a Gerrard autobiography when the previous version came out in 2007, after what he identifies as the two main peaks of his career had already passed: Istanbul 2005, and Cardiff 2006. Nevertheless, I think a better version could have been written. There are bits of the previous autobiography reheated, such as the passage about Basel 2002, Gerard Houllier, and his parents’ divorce. However, I suppose including this in order to compare and contrast with Basel 2014 is fine. There are also strange omissions. For example, there is nothing about Gerrard's second half hat trick as a substitute against Napoli in the Europa League in November 2010.There are also some good chapters. The section on injuries and surgeries is painful to read, not because of the writing, but because the gruesome detail. The section about Steve Peters, the sports psychiatrist, the theory of the inner chimp, and Gerrard’s thirty-eight seconds of crazy genius and madness in his last game against Manchester United, is also an entertaining read. It was interesting to read about him heading to Monaco with his wife right after the slip against Chelsea during the tilt at the title, and to Dubai with the players after the extended retirement celebrations, and the calamity at Stoke. For me, the slip and the flight to Monaco only served to make a hero more human. I don’t blame Gerrard one iota for taking his family to Los Angeles to have a break from all the attention and pressure he has to put up with on Merseyside, and the abuse he gets from jealous rival fans. The book ends with a line that Gerrard’s dad often said to him when he was a child: “This is where it starts. Everything you’ve done before this has gone.” As Gerrard’s career continues in Los Angeles, and as he completes his coaching qualifications, I am sure there will be very many more entertaining chapters ahead.

Steven Gerrard left a lasting impression on me, when, as a sixteen year old growing up in a small town in central India, I watched his heroic team make the comeback of all comebacks, better known as the miracle of Istanbul these days. The book is a great insight into his mind and character, and the leadership qualities he so clearly possesses. Thanks for the memories, Stevie. YNWA!

Very interesting. Steven Gerrard is one of my favorite players, and I am happy that he was able to share his life, a deeper meaning, through this book. YOU WIILL NEVER WALK ALONE

Boyfriend is a huge Liverpool/Gerrard fan. LOVED this as a gift. He seems to really enjoy it so far :)

My 13 y/o son loved it

I enjoyed hearing Gerrard's accounts of the highs and lows of his career. Some aspects were repetitive but overall it was ok.

Absolutely amazing! I received it two days ago and I love it! My day never passes away without reading it.The book has everything. The reader will enjoy every piece of it and believe me who ever buys this book will experience the most incredible moments of Steven Gerrard's life!

Great insight into Liverpools greatest players career, highs n lows, humanistic as well, always a Reds legend. Welcome back Stevey G.

This artbook is GORGEOUS! Yu Watase is such a talented artist and storyteller, it's so great to just have all the art from my favorite manga series in one book. The colors are crisp and bold, and the printing, binding, and layout are very high-quality and professional. The incredible detail of the artwork and great story make Ceres, in my opinion, better than Fushigi Yugi. I think Watase have improved a lot in the presentation of her characters, and the artwork looks much more mature and detailed. This artbook also includes character descriptions, legend summaries, manga summaries, maps, plot descriptions, as well as an incredibly enriching interview with Watase herself. This interview is really good. She gives very insightful information about the creation and production of this great series. She talks about the messages she wanted to convey through Ayashi no Ceres, and her own thoughts and feelings about it. Reading this interview really lets you see how mature, creative, and passionate she is (how many other manga writers/artists chat with the readers DURING the book?).So, in other words, if you like her types of drawings, GET THIS ARTBOOK. It's so worth it. Full color pages, every single published and unpublished drawing from Ayashi no Ceres by Watase. You'll marvel at how beautiful and genuine the art is. This artbook is incredible.

I am a huge fan of Yuu Watase! And this book was gorgeous! It has a lot of the artwork from the book, as well as all the covers. It has a character relationship chart which I thought was helpful as well.

If you are a huge fan of Yuu Watase's artwork you won't regret purchasing this artbook! There are 120 pages, most are in colour that are filled with just breath-taking pictures of the characters from Ceres: Celestial Legend (aka Ayashi no Ceres). If you've seen pictures of Watase-san's artwork for Fushigi Yuugi you will see a major difference in her drawings specifically the eyes and hair! Highly detailed in every possible way includiing the background. Adore this artbook because it really is a piece of art for shoujo and Watase-san fans everywhere!

I'm a big Watase fan simply because her art is so great! I loved this book even more than her "Art of Fushigi Yuugi." - But that book is great, too. I must say, over the years, my drawings have shifted a lot. Now, all of the artists I love show through my drawings, and Yuu Watase's style is seen more than any other manga artist! If you want any book to help you draw manga, please do not hesitate to get this book!

Yu Watase comes through again with her new series, Ceres. The art is breathtaking, and the editor's review honestly does it no justice at all.Ceres is a story based on a Japanese legend, and in this legend Ceres (A Heavenly maiden) is forced to marry a fisherman, and the story of Yu Watase's work is that the original Ceres grew old and had children, but always wished to go back to where she came from. So, she inhabbits the body of a girl every generation, and at 16 each girl of the family is tested to make sure she's not possessed. The main female character turns 16, and poof. She's 'possessed'...I'm not saying what happens next, but the art is enough to make you drool.Even non-Yu Watase fans will enjoy this Art book, and fans will find it just as enjoyable, even if not moreso.

I Love it, Thank You SSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOO Much!!!!!!It's a great addition to my collectionAgain Thank you

A well written and very interesting story of men who valued a try for freedom over all its danger over life in a Japanese death camp. I really enjoyed every step of their amazing journey. I'm a retired Marine Corps officer and I've about run out of interesting Korean and Vietnam War books. Now I'm backtracking to WW II. I love great true stories and am not entertained by the too many hero war novels which are a waste of time and money. I recommend this book as a great read even though the journey these men took is almost unbelievable. They had a hundred lifetimes of adventure in their months of journey to freedom. Book also provides more insight into those who help U.S, and allied people escape Japanese cruelty. I sometimes wonder if they are available for the Japanese to read. I served/lived in Japan for a few years during my Marine Corps career, even out among the Japanese and never saw the cruelty the Japanese Army exhibited. But know it was there during the second world war.

I echo the comments of the other reviewers in stating this book is superb! I am an Escape Aficionado - I have read probably two dozen books dealing with POWs - and this is one of the best! That human beings are able to keep pushing on in the deplorable conditions McCormac recounts is a tribute to the human spirit. McCormac's writing puts you in the midst of the action - a truly gripping read. McCormac's story is recounted (amongst others) in the good book Escape-Or Die, by Paul Brickhill (who also wrote "The Great Escape". Other Escape/POW books recommended are "Sitting it Out" (by author of Von Ryan's Express) Westheimer, Escaper's Progress (David James), Escape from the Rising Sun (Ian Skidmore), Long Way Back to the River Kwai (Velmans), Escape from Corregidor (Whitcomb) and South from Corregidor (John Morrill), Lonely Vigil (Walter Lord) and The War Journal of Major Damon "Rocky" Gause: The Firsthand Account of One of the Greatest Escapes of World War II. Enjoy!

I have read many books of the 2,nd world war. this one stands out as remarkably one of the very best i have read. knowing the barbaric nature of the japanese military at that period of time and the author is so well versed in his writing, i could not put it down .Do not miss this if you can find it!!

This interesting account exemplifies the extremes of human behavior brought about by war. The courage of Charles McCormack and his fellow escapees and their hunger to survive against all odds....The extreme cruelty of their Japanese captors, committing atrocities that are difficult for the average person of today to comprehend.... The kindness of the many people who helped these brave men to overcome the odds against them. People with nothing to gain from doing so. This book is one of the best accounts of the suffering and triumphs of survivors of the Japanese prison camps that I have ever read. Well written and exciting. I couldn't put it down. Highly recommended.

I loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone, except perhaps Japanese (since they were the strong and menacing protagonists in this book). The story represents a great testament to the multi-faceted aspects of humanity, accentuated by crisis.

Splendidly written, carefully crafted, excruciatingly detailed and embellished with human pathos. Being true adds to the anguish, anticipation and satisfaction.

The only thing I can fault about this account is that he said the flying boat landed at Broome which he then said was the landing place for Darwin. His memory was faulty here as Broome in Western Australia is a twenty hour drive away from Darwin in the Northern Territory, and that's on modern roads.

If you saw this in a movie you'd never believe it could be true. The brutality of the Japanese occupation, the cruelty of the camps, and the daring of the escape come alive in this slim account.

From School Library Journal

Gr 5-9-This adaptation of O'Reilly and Martin Dugard's Killing Kennedy (Holt, 2012) retains the adult version's brief chapters and "you are there" style. It opens with O'Reilly's memories of the day his high-school class learned of the events of November 22, 1963, and then briefly describes the backgrounds of the president and the assassin. Most of the book, however, follows the parallel paths of Kennedy and Oswald as they approach the fateful day in Dallas, describing the most important aspects of Kennedy's presidency and life, contrasting them with Oswald's radical beliefs, myriad failures, and growing isolation. O'Reilly discusses both men's personal lives but omits details of Kennedy's sexual escapades and Oswald's marriage found in the adult version. He gives an hour-by-hour account of the day and the assassination, and Oswald's capture and subsequent murder, and evaluates Kennedy's legacy. An afterword relates the post-assassination fates of major characters, and back matter provides primary-source documents, source information, and an overview of the Warren Commission's investigation. The well-captioned photos and maps that appear on almost every page are a major strength of the book. YA titles such as Wilborn Hampton's Kennedy Assassinated! (Candlewick, 1997) offer similar, detailed accounts of the assassination, but readers will find O'Reilly's readable style and juxtaposition of Kennedy's and Oswald's lives to be appealing. The popularity of the adult title will drive interest, but this book is strong enough to draw its own audience. An excellent choice for middle-school libraries.-Mary Mueller, Rolla Public Schools, MOα(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. This riveting account of the horrific assassination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy is adapted from Bill O'Reilly's bestselling "Killing Kennedy." This fascinating, illustrated edition is designed for age 10 and over. The author chronicles a valuable, historical narrative of the tragedy that not only changed my generation, but the entire nation. Bill O'Reilly presents information on the shocking events leading to the assassination, the political crisis JFK was facing, and life of JFK and his family in the public eye. In addition, the author describes an angry drifter, known as Lee Harvey Oswald, who was taken into police custody while accused of the most notorious crime of the twentieth century. The prime suspect escapes, is captured, then shot dead, and I remember quite well watching the TV with my dad as Oswald fell to the ground. This horrifying event repeated itself on the News, as much as the chaos of the scene of JFK in the car, after the shooting. One of the worst memories planted in my mind was JFK's funeral, with his wife and two very young helpless children as they stood in silence, while the entire country mourned. One of my best memories of when JFK took office was looking forward to his brother visiting my school, and always viewing the passion JFK had for his children. Bill O'Reilly describes in detail a gripping, thrilling story of a day that marked history as it shed darkness into the world. In conclusion, he also highlights a brave leader, a hero, and a President who wanted to make the world a better place to live in. My dad never forgot Pearl Harbor, my daughters will never forget 9/11 and I remember November 22, 1963, as if it were yesterday. Despite all conspiracy theories, questions unanswered about Oswald's reason for action, or if he acted alone and mysterious findings in the investigations, the answers will never be found. However, the terrifying assassination of JFK and the consequences of this tragedy, along with changes that took place in that era, can never be forgotten. Most important, there is indeed a marked difference in presenting a thrilling historical story that one is an expert on researching, in comparison to living through those uneasy years of sadness, chaos and discontent. Insightful, captivating, and concise. Highly recommended!--Geraldine Ahearn(Author Geri Ahearn)

This is an excellent read. I'm a Baby Boomer and was alive when this event happened. The book was well researched and factual. It caught me up and I read it quickly. I highly recommend this book and a look at one of the darkest moments in the history of the USA.

Not too bad but being an assassination buff and having read hundreds of books on it this was mediocre. Not as good as Bill's other books by any stretch of the imagination!

Full of wonderfully photographs. Excellent book for children and seniors who have trouble reading. Such a sad event I our history. This book documents it well.

Similar to his other books, goes back in time as I thought it was going to focus on his last days in more detail.

Enjoyed this book so much! I love the way Bill O'Reilly writes, as if he was reading the book to you. Great information that provides you with a history lesson. I purchased many of this series.

Great for young readers - 6th-12th grade. Easy to comprehend. Straightforward with no fluff.

Very easy to read got through it in a day. Mostly everything we already new about, there were a few things that were mentioned in the book that were new info for me.

I have purchased 5 of Bill O''Rielly's books. They include all the facts related to subject matter, and are an excellent read.

To his credit Stieglitz paints an all too accurate picture of the failings of globalism including the exacerbation of wealth accumulated on the banking, investment, multinational side of the market. Thomas Piketty describes these investment dollars growing faster than income as well, but neither fully appreciate the sized of the liquidity drain from the consumer side off the market.Stieglitz takes the optimistic position that globalism can be fixed and fixed in such a way as to protect those who are adversely effected by the outsourcing of jobs and manufacturing including services and loss of discretionary purchasing power. He would do so with tax credits and entitlements, however. That alone confirms that globalism is not just a contemporary failure but structurally flawed and unsustainable. The book contains extensive and I would say unsubstantiated slanderous accusations against President Trump that clouds the otherwise credible evaluations of the economy. Don’t get me wrong, this appears to be the only economist willing to acknowledge the actual damage done by globalism. In listing solutions to the problems with globalization, Stieglitz faces the issue of maldistribution of capital and suggests tax reform. He does not go to the extent of taxing capital as per Piketty’s current campaign in France, but he does voice the need to tax high income, capital gains and inheritance.“Taxation is not just a matter of fairness: carrying out other parts of a successful government program to combat the adverse affects of globalization will require more revenues.”This updated analysis of globalization remains a must read for credible acknowledgement of the problems with globalism in its present form and for any appreciation for the reasons for its demise. It’s not anti imagination neo-tribalism or uneducated populism but a democratic election for an end to what has not worked for over 44 years. Populism among citizens expressed at the pols equals democracyFree trade in the time of Adam Smith did not include unbalanced trade or high tech strategic concerns, nor did he say it would work in all cases; however, It did include colonialism. Globalism has been from the start just another way for banks and multinationals to engage in the basic art of pillage and plunder. Our own citizens were victims with a massive transfer of wealth from the consumer’s market liquidity to the new oligarchs of the manufacturing and investment side — a must read.

The is the most expensive 10o pages I have ever purchased. Had I known that this was nothing more than an 97 page introduction to a reprint of the 2002 edition, I would not have purchased it.

Interesting read, I like that he references current events.

It takes some temerity to add yet another to 35 existing reviews of this book! But I do have a rather different reading of it. Previous reviewers seem to have thought that it was either the cat's meow or just a venomous attack. I am somewhere in between. The book makes a number of excellent, telling points against IMF and World Bank policies and assumptions. It does this in the context of what is, indeed, a full-scale attack--no punches pulled. Stiglitz' alternatives are not always the most viable or well-considered, either. So, three or four stars for good critique, but nothing for balance or for coherent solutions. What worries me more is Stiglitz' lack of attention to a couple of notorious facts about the WB and IMF. He mentions them and then goes on to other things. First, these agencies have routinely supported the most unspeakably brutal and murderous dictatorships: Marcos in the Philippines, Mobutu in Zaire (now Congo), Rios Montt in Guatemala, the thugs of Sudan, the military junta in Indonesia, and on and on. They continued to do this for years after it became general knowledge that these regimes were using the loans, and other aid, to line their pockets and to buy weapons to suppress their own people--and then they ran down their countries' health and education systems to pay back the loans. This wasn't economic theory at work and it wasn't ignorance. We still need a serious study of this. The notorious lack of accountability, stressed by Stiglitz, has to be remedied. Second, the World Bank in particular, and now the WTO also, have routinely gone up against the environment--though they know perfectly well that everyone, and especially the poor in the Third World, depends on the environment for survival. A highly-placed World Bank researcher (necessarily unnamed here!) told me some time ago that the World Bank's own studies show that all their big-dam projects cost more than they produce in benefits. The costs are born by the poor (especially those displaced by the reservoirs). The benefits largely go to the rich. The WTO's policies on "free" trade are notorious; they tolerate without protest the enormous subsidies that First World governments give their farmers (as pointed out by Stiglitz) but they won't bend a millimetre to protect forests, fish, and wildlife that are vital to the survival of Third World poor. We need a much better study and account of all this. Whatever is going on in the non-transparent boardrooms of these agencies, the effect has been to keep the Third World in its classic position: an impoverished supplier of raw materials to the First World. The worst thing about the WB-IMF-WTO policy mix is that it routinely leads to the sacrifice not only of the environment but also of long-term investments like education. Without an educated workforce, the Third World is doomed to permanent poverty and backwardness. Everybody knows this, but the policies go on. I wish Stiglitz, or someone, would take all this on.

Stiglitz shreds the IMF -- tactfully -- but not tactfully enough to avoid an angry backlash from his peers at the IMF. He highlights what has been wrong and even idiotic about IMF-run globalization and ill-timed structural adjustments, poor sequencing. He thinks democratic leaders should decide HOW they implement global economics, perhaps with some guidance, not just the avaricious Washington Consensus demanding austerity measure and open up for speculative capital flows. He describes how the World Bank, with himself at the helm, tried to accomplish it's historical purpose -- to spread prosperity and help facilitate trade, not looting. He described some brilliant and compassionate leaders and economists he worked with. But until recently, it's been Paul Wolfowitz in charge of what Stiglitz used to do. Woe be unto all of us.
