Very disappointed in this book. First it was fairly expensive so I anticipated a really good 1st grade book. The pictures are very good, however, the book has very few pages; the text is too hard for first graders and the body of work is disparate facts from the different continents - not enough to have a child feel that s/he knows much of anything about the continents. That, plus there's no rhyme or reason to where these places are... one will need a globe anyway. I'd say, skip this one.
Of all the books I have purchased from Baby Professor this is the one I was most excited to see. I do not teach 1st grade, the title implying that this story is most suitable for those in that age range, but reviewing the seven continents is one of the skills that is covered yearly in my second grade classroom. I feel as if I have plenty of books discussing each continent individually, but none that briefly discuss each continent in one book.First of all, if you are a fan of the oxford comma like I am you will notice that it's missing in this book. Not a huge deal, but something I took note of as I was reading. I really enjoyed how the author explained that the continents were 7 large land masses although I would like to point out that, in my eyes, the world is created of six large land masses and the divide between Europe and Asia is a cultural one rather than a physical one. However, those are my issues and most readers would likely see a well-written explanation of our Earth's continents.Some words you may want to review if you are reading this with young children are populous, terrain, and climate. Despite having some trickier vocabulary I still find this book to be highly appropriate for early elementary aged students. I think they will be drawn to the simple text, interesting pictures, and, best of all, the maps I've been hoping to find in some of the companion books.I received this book at a discount in exchange for an honest review.
I currently homeschool 3 of my 5 kids and we love educational books that spark an interest in learning more. My 5 year old and 3 year old LOVED this book. This book has 15 pages of information. First it addresses what a continent is and the names of the 7 continents of earth.After the introduction page, they break down the pages by continent. Every other page has an introduction page with information about that continent. It is followed by a picture of a landmark from that continent.The information pages are great. They include the shape of the land of the continent. Then a block of information that is a couple of sentences long that give information about the size of the continent, the climate, the population, etc. This information is age appropriate for the 1st grade ages. This information and continent shape is found on a backdrop of a map that is used with all 7 continents.Following the introduction page is a beautiful, eye catching, full color picture of a landmark from that continent. These pictures were by far the greatest part of this book. These pictures provided opportunity to discuss different cultures and climates. Very beautifully done!I received this e-book for free in exchange for my honest review. This incentive did not affect my review of this e-book.
1St Grade Geography: Continents of the World: First Grade Books (Children's Explore the World Books) Kindle EditionI'm reviewing this book from an educator's perspective. It is short and concise which is very appropriate for a 1st Grade audience. We are in the digital age and for this reason tablets are nearly accessible in many classrooms in the United States. I would have this book available to my 1st graders to read in the classroom. The only reason I didn't give it 5 Stars is because is is slightly lacking in the "WOW" factor. It dedicates a page to each continent and explains a popular place in relation to the County that is outlined on the previous page. For example, The Eiffel Towel is well known for being in Europe. The one fact that I did learn that I was not aware of is the number of volcanic mountain ranges in Antartica. I read this with my I Cloud Reader on a Macbook Pro. As a parent of two young learners, these kind of books are always a bonus to add to our collection. Our kindergarten and first grade children enjoy learning about many different subjects, and books like this are very useful tools.This book very nicely balances text with visuals which I think is very important. Little learners are still very much visual learners and the colorful & detailed pictures help to draw them in and keep them engaged while the simple yet informative text helps little learners understand basic ideas about the subject being presented - in this book that is an overview of the seven continents of the world.I liked how the book tells each of the seven continents of the world and then goes on to show something that continent is well known for - such as the pyramids in Egypt. Seeing the pictures and being able to make those connections between the continents and their well known landmarks will prove useful later on. It's important to understand what you are going to learn about, and the book nicely constructs a foundation for more learning the through imagery and information to take place. The pictures are colorful and nicely detailed.I was able to purchase this item at a discount in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. This review contains only my opinions and I recommend this book.
