Complete Idiot's Guide to Writing Poetry

From the Author

Remember the excitement of writing that first haiku in fourth grade, how proud you were of counting those syllables, 5-7-5, and having the poem come out just right? I do. I also remember writing a term paper on the poet Robert Frost in 11th grade – I fell in love with his language and found myself intrigued with his tragic history. I’ve been hooked on poetry ever since. I’ve made it a big part of my life. If you’re reading this letter, chances are that you share a similar feeling. Once it gets into you, poetry has a way of staying put. Poetry is an art whose fans and critics are also practitioners as well. Rarely does a fan of classical music take up composing, or an art critic take up sculpting. But poetry is special. You can practice it anywhere – at home, work, in prison, on a deserted island – provided you have a pencil and a scrap of paper. I believe that beginners first come to poetry as an art partly because they already own the tools to make it. If you can read and write, chances are you also can pen a poem. But there’s a misconception that a pen and paper is all you need. A great poem takes more than just the ability to form legible words with a ballpoint. Much more. This book will take you though the skills you require to become a good poet. I can’t promise you greatness and fame, but I can promise you that you’ll learn the parts and pieces that make up a poem – the feeling and inspiration are between you and your muse. You’ll also get practical advice on journaling, revision, workshops, reading in public, poetry exercises, and the recognition most poets desire – publishing. Are you going to find everything you need to know about poetry here? Well, no. But you’ll find more than a start – this book will take you far beyond novice status if you practice along with the exercises and suggestions – you may even find some great successes along the way.

I have been interested in poetry for most of my life and even though I have three poetry collections published, I still consider myself a beginner in writing poetry. Lately, I decided to increase my knowledge and review some basic poetry rules. I purchased this book (The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Writing Poetry by Nikki Moustaki) at a bargain price and I think it is fantastic. Do not be turned off at the title because these formula guides go into great detail on numerous topics, and this book is no exception. This book is organized into 23 information packed chapters that will help to improve your poetry no matter what your experience is in creating poems. I wish I had this highly informative book when I first began writing poetry. Here is just a sample of the information this 338 page book contains: What is poetry and how to write it? This covers essential basic information about poetry. What poetry is made of explains the important factors that make a poem. Getting started deals with valuable information on how to begin writing poetry. Journaling is also covered in this section. There is so much valuable information in this text that this short review cannot do this book justice. If you are interested in writing poetry or you are just a lover of reading great poetry, this is a book you should check out. I found it to be a great read and highly informative. Whether you are an experienced poet or a beginner trying to write and understand poetry, this book will be of great value in your quest of poetry excellence.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: The Samurai Soul: An old warrior’s poetic tribute).

This book contains everything one would need to know or could possibly ask in regards to writing poetry. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Writing Poetry breaks down the issue of writing poetry into several different topics. Poetry is defined and dissected in order for the reader to write poetry themselves. The different types of poetry are explained and examples are given. There is literally too much information contained in this book to sum it up in a paragraph or two. I was not that good at writing poetry before reading and applying the information in this book to my problem with not being able to write poetry. Now, I'd like to think I can write poems. I may not be a professional writer by any means, but I don't feel inadequate when it comes to writing poetry anymore. I can hold my own now when it comes to writing poetry. Thank you Nikki Moustaki and thank you Amazon. I purchased The Complete Idiot's Guide to Writing Poetry for just a dollar or two. My book arrived in excellent condition just three days after my order was placed.

I hadn't written poetry for years. "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Writing Poetry" made me realise how much more there is to poetry. From the types of rhyme available to the lexical tools used by poets to convey their poem's meaning with word, sound (cacophonous vs harmonious), visual appearance of words on the page, syllable counts and so on.I bought this book based upon the Amazon reviews of other customers and wasn't disappointed. This book delivers and demonstrates the craft of poetry as a labour of love.I do recommend in conjunction with this book "Poemcrazy: Freeing Your Life with Words" by Susan G. Wooldridge. I used the latter book's techniques to bring out my innermost creativity, thoughts and sentiments. These two books together are a winning team :-)

I have feared and loathed poetry since 6th grade. I recall having to read and write some poetry in earlier grades, yet at that point in your education...not a lot is expected out of you. In 6th grade we had a whole poetry unit. I'd read the poetry and just didn't get it. The entire unit I turned in a blank paper for my poem. I hated poetry. Fast forward to age 45 and a returning college student and in my eagerness to return to school I didn't even think about poetry. The entire semester of English Composition 101 was spent on grammar and mechanics and the art of argumentation. I was cool with this and the professor didn't even look like the 'poetry type.' Surely I was safe from the evil grip of poetry. ...haha Never judge a book or a professor by the cover...'tricky they be.' The last day of class was to be 'light and fluffy' as it was finals. It was to late to bolt from the room as he whipped out this big book of POETRY! UGH! I was right next to the door...surely I could still escape, but aside from the immense respect for the professor, suddenly I was intrigued with the first poem and subsequent poems as he read them with character voices. Then we counted off by twos and the ones had to write one sentence and fold the paper over slightly and whisper the last word of the sentence to the next student and around the room the papers went. After we completed this, he read the poems off and WOW...I was hooked!DANG IT! I was bummed to find out he teaches only the 101 composition class, yet he recommended a particular class to get my feet wet further with poetry. First day of second semester and a poem was examined right out the gate...bizarre how I could go from loathing poetry to 'giving it a chance.'I BEGAN searching AMAZON for a good inclusive introductory poetry book...I didn't want to just read poetry...I wanted to understand it completely. This book is a great introduction to anyone with a fear or loathing of poetry. Not being a long time fan of poetry I'm not sure how it would be viewed but for us metrophobics I think the book will help you a great deal. It is an easy read and is enticing to wanting to explore poetry further. I'm actually excited about poetry now...actually rewind to the 'light and fluffy' day in class and I was hooked. My sons bought a couple of books from Amazon on poetry for Christmas and have really enjoyed them. I'm just two chapters in so far and I can't wait to read more...and perhaps write my first poem.
