The Mermaid, by Jan Brett

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—In an aquatic version of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," Kiniro, the beautiful mermaid, is intrigued by the mystique and beauty of the little seashell house she swims by. Curious, she enters the home and sees breakfast set on the table. Unable to resist, Kiniro tastes the marine delicacies. The delicious morsel in the smallest bowl is her favorite, and she eats it up completely. The mermaid then floats to the living room and sits in three chairs. The smallest chair is the prettiest, but she breaks it to bits as she tries to wiggle in. Finally, Kiniro feels the three beds and discovers that she loves the little clamshell swing bed the most. This is where the octopus family finds her when they return to their watery abode. Not only is this fractured fairy tale a delight to read, there is also an adorable side story skillfully told in the border art as only Brett can. Set in the waters off of the coast of Okinawa, this colorful picture book is exquisite. The full-page illustrations are gorgeous in shades of turquoise, pink, green, and blue. The border art is detailed, and readers could spend hours diving into all there is to explore. VERDICT A one-on-one treat for folktale aficionados and, of course, for Brett's many fans.—Amy Shepherd, St. Anne's Episcopal School, Middleton, DE

Review

★ "In this dazzling remix, Brett sets "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" under the sea. The bears turn into octopuses, dressed in the straw hats and indigo-dyed coats of rural Japan, and Goldilocks becomes Kiniro, a mermaid with black hair and golden scales (“kin-iro” is Japanese for gold). . . Brett’s brightly colored, highly detailed art shines in this aquatic setting as she embellishes the octopuses’ dwelling with shells, coral, and tropical fish that swim in and out of the windows. . .  Brett’s fans will rejoice, and she’ll make new ones, too."—Publishers Weekly, starred review"In an aquatic version of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," Kiniro, the beautiful mermaid, is intrigued by the mystique and beauty of [a] little seashell house. I love Jan Brett's work, and the undersea Japanese setting is absolutely delightful. Artistically, once again she does a great job with the animals, imaginative decorative work, and exuberant color, though I did think the proportions of the little mermaid girl -- and especially the treatment of her flowing hair - was a bit lacking. Nevertheless, the reader can't help but be charmed by the 'Goldilocks' variation told here, with the clever treatment of food, chairs, and beds and a host of cunning details -- like the baby octopus's Nudibranch pull-toys or the octopus sucker shibori design on the happi (jacket) of the octopuses. (And I do like octopuses very much, so it is particularly enjoyable to have them featured as main charactersSeveral reviewers thought pages must be missing, and at first reading I was startled at the jump from "peril" to conclusion. But the story is clearly told through illustration. Reading aloud to a child, ask them -- what happened? The adult octopuses are not angry anymore, the ray is plainly happy, and hmm, isn't the mermaid missing something? I think it would also be fun to play seek & identify with the wealth of Pacific sea life beautifully illustrated on all the pages here, making this a book to explore over and over again.

I love Jan Brett books and collect them for my children. This is the only one so far that I’m not very excited about. It’s a mermaid, underwater version of the three little bears and while it’s cute and the artwork is outstanding, the story isn’t as good as her other books.

I have all of Jan Brett's books and love all of them. I don't love the Mermaid. Too many illustrations boggled the eye. Also, The three bears story is trite; she should have an old, obscure fairy tale. Furthermore, there's a sequence at the end where to story fell flat. It's like one or two pages are missing to complete the story.

This book is definitely missing pages!!! They published it with at least 2-4 missing pages. I thought my copy was bad and requested second copy. Both are bad.... I’m extremely disappointed!!!

I'm a retired elementary school teacher and big fan of Jan Brett. The illustrations and the story line are lovely. For younger readers, following the pattern of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" will be a delight. If I was still in the classroom, I'd use this to compare and contrast this book with Goldilocks. A great literature lesson! I got it for a grand niece and, of course, a mermaid doll with black hair to match!

Jan Brett never disappoints!! From gorgeous and inviting illustrations to wonderful storylines, she holds the reader's attention from page one to the end!

We already have 2 books by the author. The mitten and the snow bears. This book has really beautiful pictures but it's the same story (Goldilocks and the three bears) as the snow bear book.

As always, Jan Brett has written a cute story with great illustrations. I have all of her books and read them over and over as well as look at the beautiful illustrations! I collect mermaid books and this is a wonderful addition to my library.
