This tale of a young boy who stumbles into a plan by demons (in his neighbors basement, no less) who have opened the gates of hell and intend to bring hell to Earth is a delight for both young and adult readers. While not the style I would usually read, I could not pass up a chance to read more John Connolly. Characters such as Nurd, The Scourge of the Five Deities (who is a demon but not all that bad), and Samuel's dog Boswell make this book funny and worth the read.

I am a devotee of John Connolly's 'Charlie Parker' detective thrillers...his stand-alone novels and his spine-tingling short stories and novellas. Therefore, I had to read this book, even though it was marketed for a young audience.Mr. Connolly, along with a few other authors like Mark Helprin, is a ravishing wordsmith. His paragraphs immerse you in places, people and feelings of such vivid authenticity, that when you close the book, it takes you a moment to reconcile with 'reality' again. That said, 'The Gates' tells the tale of an offbeat, young fellow who stumbles across (and, thwarts) an eons-in-the-making plan to free the denizens of Hell upon an unsuspecting humanity. Nothing new there, right? However, in Mr. Connolly's hands, it becomes a dark, wacky tale that reads like Hieronymus Bosch channeling Monty Python. It veers between demonic humans, and rather-humanic demons...the mad whimsy of a bright child's logic, and scenes out of the purest, grimmest nightmares. That's my main criticism of the book...its too dark for kids, and perhaps a bit too kid-centric for teens/young adults. As such, I was reluctant to recommend it to either my 11 year-old daughter (too gruesome in some scenes) or my 17 year-old son (he wouldn't connect with the young protagonist). Me? I'm too old to worry about such things, when reading a ripping yarn like 'The Gates'.

I really enjoyed this audio book. Kept me interested. I just got done with hitchhickers guide to the galaxy. Needed something to listen to on my half hr boring car rides to work and back. Kept me happy with this and interested. Felt a bit like a harry potter and hitch hickers guid to the galaxy book. Will buy the other audio books from this author soon..

Most comedic fantasies of this sort just assume their readers will accept vampires, wolf men, super heroes with ex-ray vision, or teens who can do tricks on a broom. John Connolly is different in that he works hard here suspending our disbelief. He even explains Big Bang Theory and the Hadron Super Collider, which he uses to get the action started.Samuel Johnson and his eponymous dog Boswell go trick or treating three days early to get a jump on everyone else, but Sam gets more than he bargained for: he witnesses what looks like devil worshipping and the opening of a portal to hell. That's where the Super Collider comes in. While Mr. and Mrs. Abernathy (the devil worshipping people) and two of their friends are summoning the devil, the Super Collider goes haywire (as it did in real life with less catastrophic consequences) and the devil (The Great Malevolence here) takes advantage of the tiny hole connecting the two universes and sends his minions to prepare the way.My favorite monster was Nurd, The Scourge of Five Deities. He's sort of a dunce among dunces and has been demoted to the worst place in hell, a place called the Wasteland with his only companion being a lower entity called Wormword whom he treats badly. When he's sent to scare Samuel to death, he makes friends instead. There's also a vicar and his deacon who are confronted with dead bodies coming to life from the graveyard next door. Samuel is an eleven-year-old boy and Connelly can't have a bunch of monsters running rough shod over a little kid, so this becomes a sort of keystone cops comedy with the devil's minions getting more than they bargained for. The ending points back at the beginning. If you know anything about black holes, you'll be able to predict what happens. A comparable writer would be Christopher Moore.
