We need more gay and lesbian children's books. I think it helps our kids not feel so much like the minority when in school so this book was perfect for our little guy! Well written and great illustrations. Our son just loves it and wants to read it almost every night!!

I got this book for our nieces as they have two moms and just started school. The book is very well illustrated and cute. The girls loved it and said, "they are like us!"

I love this book...not only does it speak to same sex families, but it also talks about all different types of families so it really helps get the correct message across to our kids. Love it!

Klein is a writer specializing in history, travel, and sports. The Irish, as a people, were involved in many western hemisphere conflicts. Bernardo O'Higgins led the effort for Chilean independence. John Riley and the St. Patrick Brigade fought with the Mexican army in the Mexican-American War while other Irish earlier fought to defend the Alamo. The Irish have a history of fighting for causes they believe in. One cause has always been freedom from British rule.After the Civil War, Irish men on both sides of the lines joined in a plan to gain Independence from England by seizing Canada. The soldiers' connection to Ireland was much stronger than the color of the uniform they previously fought in. The circumstances of the times allowed this invasion plan to progress. Many believed that the potato famine was a result of a British plot which added to their determination. Americans were leary of England because of their support of the South in the Civil War. Americans also remembered the British came through Canada and burned Washington DC. Klein writes a smooth flowing and well-documented history of the events leading to the invasion, the invasion, and its aftermath. Klein's writing style and the obscurity of the event almost seems like alternative history. It was an almost perfect storm of events and circumstances that created this chapter in history.

An interesting, well-researched book, Klein tells the little known story of Irishmen fighting for Ireland's freedom in America. Plenty of context is provided to understand Irish and English feelings (both politically and personally), culminating in the Great Hunger when millions of Irish died and millions travelled to America to avoid the potato famine. Irishmen fought on both sides of the American Civil War, but many saw this battle as a training ground for a larger, more important, war- the war for Irish freedom from England.As with any story of a large group of people, political and idealogical differences divided those planning to free Ireland. The focus here, as the title suggests, is the decision by Irish nationalists to hurt England by invading Canada. Three main invasion plans over a few years led to battles, the breaking of neutrality laws, political fighting, and eventually the largest unintended consequence of all: Canada as a separate nation. The political maneuverings were fascinating, with America working secretly (or not) to claim Canada for itself, Irish nationalists trying to hold land hostage to negotiate for Ireland's independence, and individuals searching for glory.Klein does an excellent job showing the reader how the seemingly ridiculous plan to take Canada by a group of overly optimistic individuals directly influenced the twentieth century Irish rebellions and led to the country we know today. Fascinating and fast-paced, "When the Irish Invaded Canada" is a must read for anyone interested in nineteenth century America and Canada, let alone the evolution of the Irish national movement towards independence.

This book is well written and researched. It covers the numerous attempts of a group of Irish immigrants who try and invade Canada in order to take it over and force England to negoiate turning Ireland into a republic. This all takes place shortly after the civil war when groups of Irishmen who fought on both sides of the war join the cause. They were not successful due to the fact that their leadership was overly optomistic and poorly organized. At the start the United States took a passive/supportive interest under President Andrew Johnson, but was more realistic under President Grant. Great introduction to Malcolm X for young readers. I'd recommend it for grades three and up. Read it to my fifth graders, and they generally understood his beliefs and how his impact on the Civil Rights Movement. Myers doesn't leave out any of the controversy and gives readers the truth in an accessible way. We had several discussions about whether violence is necessary, how leaders can inspire people and how leaders can change - all still very relevant issues.

My son and I discussed the civil rights movement at length and when his teacher wanted the class to do a report on a civil rights activist, I wanted him to go beyond the standard MLK. So since he is a mature 12yr old, I read the other reviews and took a chance on introducing him to the more complex character of Malcolm X. My son is not a big reader but this one he couldn't put down. It also gave us alot to talk about in ref to evolving as a person. Changing opinions and positions and what are the costs involved with that. I strongly recommend this book.

This was purchased for my son's 7th grade English class. It was a good quality product and a good grade level read for my son.

THis is a good book for adolescent readers. I enjoyed it however it is meant for young adults. It lacks the detail you would find in an autobiography or a biography written for adult readers. However, very good in givingthe history and general information of this man and the happenings of the era.

I gave this book as a gift and the recipient was mesmerized reading through it, even during dinner, so I believe it was a hit...

The book touches on a lot of things from the eighties and does a good job of reminding (or introducing) a person to what the eighties were like. I only give it a four star review, though, as it seems a little light on its overall thesis. To be fair, I believe the book was written to be light and not go too deep into story symbolism or angle off on some tangent that goes way off the Stranger Things story. I would recommend it for fans of the show and those who enjoy remembering the eighties.

This series is phenomenal! As an educator and parent, I am so grateful for these books. This one is a wonderful story, written and illustrated beautifully.My daughter (6) was also very excited that there was actual braille in the book. She brought it to school to show all her friends.

Disclaimer: I’ve written the same review to almost all the books on this series. My daughter and son loves them.Been purchasing the whole series for a few months now. Super easy readings for kids, even for the 20-min trip between house and school. Interesting lives, and you can later discuss the story with the kids. I have found that most of them (stories) stick to their minds, even recalling full names and events a few weeks/months later.

I live in Alabama about 20 miles from Helen Keller's home in Tuscumbia. When my granddaughters came for spring break we visited Helen Keller's home. My ten-year-old granddaughter doesn't enjoy reading but I ordered this book for her. Because she had seen the home and had it appealed to her. And when she saw the comic-style drawings she was hooked. A fun way and interesting way to learn more about history.

We love these books. My son is 6 years old. We’ve been collected these titles for the last year and have every one in the set. He asks to read a different one every night and is learning to read them on his own. They are very educational and also entertaining. It’s amazing how much he has learned about Rosa Parks, Jim Henson, and all of the subjects of the books. He went as Jackie Robinson for book character day because, in his words, Jackie was so brave and a hero. His kindergarten teacher told me they were talking about differences and he started telling all his classmates about Gandhi. Amazing! These books have a great message and should be in everyone's library.

We have several books from this series, which we just love. This one is really cool, it has a good story, and is interactive with a page that has a braille alphabet for the kids to try. There is also a page with some pictures of objects with the braille label so the kids can try and spell out a word.

Ordinary People Change the World Series is the best. You can't go wrong. I love that Brad Meltzer's story telling is very captivating and the illustration by Christopher Eliopoulos is so cute. My 5 year old loves it. We read these books every night. Each book teaches that they were just ordinary people who had different struggles in life but they persevere by being courageous and by not giving up.

I heard about this book from the author on the radio the other day and it sounded brilliant so I bought it and thought I might give it as a gift to my son's first grade class. I received the book yesterday in the mail and my 3rd grade daughter read it before I even had a chance to look through it. She was so memorized by the story that she insisted on reading it to me immediately. It was such a well written book explaining the life of Helen Keller and all the obstacles she had to overcome. Now I have decided to give it to my daughter's 3rd grade teacher because I think that 3rd graders might be more effected by the story. Can't wait to try another book written by Mr. Meltzer.

I am in love with these books. They not only teach your kids about history but they break it down so that they can understand it. Brad Meltzer tells about this significant people in history in a way that is fun and that kids are genuinely interested in them. I would recommend these to all parents.
