This is a book mainly about the business of practicing law; how to get started, what to buy, how to assess your needs, etc. I've owned two businesses prior to going to law school and I can tell you this: if you plan on going solo, buy this book.Some readers are disappointed that it doesn't have up to date internet tips. But that's such a tiny part of what you need to know. You can find your answers to internet advertising with a quick google search. This book is about the meat and potatoes of getting off the ground. Buy it if you want to be your own boss.

Mr. Foonberg has put together a wonderful resource in this book.When starting a law practice, there are many questions, unknowns, fears, and sleepless nights. Mr. Foonberg adequately and accurately addresses each of these concerns, and helps to prepare the young lawyer for a practical startup.The only reason for leaving a 3 instead of 4 star review is the repetitive nature of the writing style in the book. That said, Mr. Foonberg does in fact warn you about this repetitive style, and states that it is because of being intended to be used as a manual as opposed to a novel, and so information is included in multiple parts in case you're looking something up and don't read another section including the same information.

THE AUTHOR HAS UP DATED HIS ORIGINAL WORK; "How to directly into the practice of law without missing a meal" which was GREAT 39 years ago I followed his advice right out of law school) and it is even more pertinent today. If you can find a copy of the first book it had some solid ideas on making a contract with an established firm that would cost them nothing and put work on your desk and money in your pocket from day 1. I also took his advice to hire my own in-town, highly respected attorney for brain-picking and advice -- there was no case I was afraid to investigate (or dump).

This book talks about Rolodex, fax machines, carbon copies, and other antiquated nonsense. Avoid.

I bought this book before starting up my new law practice because it's one of really only two good books on opening a law office, and this one seemed to have the most praise.On the positive side: (1) It appears that Foonberg really cares about the legal profession, and he would like to help future lawyers become better advocates and counselors for their clients. This is obvious in his writing style, and in his constant reminders that attorneys are in a service profession. (2) Foonberg really makes an effort to try and keep the book updated and relevant by offering new editions. Many authors would have just let it ride on a book written 20 years ago. (3) There aren't many attorney-authors that have really attempted to put together such a comprehensive and focused book specifically on opening a law practice.On the negative side: (1) With all due respect to Mr. Foonberg, the current edition is very much a work of Dr. Frankenstein. It has been pieced and stitched together, with parts being swapped in and out. The book does not flow with a theme, and it appears the author has made so many revisions over time that the chapters have been inserted and removed simply as needed. My opinion is that the book needs to be completely rewritten from the ground up. (2) Despite his best efforts to stay current, many of Foonberg's ideas are terribly outdated. For example, his chapter on Personal Data Assistants (PDAs) consists of essentially a paragraph. My PDA is not only my complete calendaring and docketing system, but it is also a significant part of my client conflict checking system, and it contains all of my "to do" or task lists. Foonberg also makes numerous references to some office equipment and stationary production techniques that I don't think are even in existence anymore. (3) The book needs to stay more current on discussing the internet and how it's changed the legal profession. I've talked to some small practitioners in larger cities who get 90% of their new clients from the internet. I also know that many attorneys have replaced the traditional law library (a very expensive entire wall of books) with free access to legal reference materials and case law on the internet.Overall, I still think my purchase and reading of this book was one of the best investments I've made into my practice. I also applaud Foonberg for continuing to work on the subject. With a major revision, this book could be a huge service not only to all future lawyers, but to all of the people in this country looking for a dedicated attorney to help them with their legal needs.

The author writes each chapter as a standalone. The result is repetition . . . which is good. I bought an older, dated edition; and, as you might imagine, the technology is dated and technology has changed the way we do things. The author points out that his book will always lag technology, but that any technology that works is obsolete. Somethings never change - how to chose a location, decisions about how to organize files, how to attract clients,setting fees, etc. If starting a law practice is in your future, reading a random chapter here and there or reading the book from cover to cover will smooth the road. So, you can read the four chapters of interest and walk away, and you will have received a return on your time investment and money. Additionally, you can come back and read other sections along the way and at any time in the develop of your practice and benefit.

I tried to give it another star but just couldn't. Author talks in generalities throughout (e.g. advertise online). No kidding. Advertise on yellow pages. Network at bar events. really thanks. There is nothing in this book you can't google. Think about that. Maybe this was relevant 10 years ago but today not worth the purchase.

Baron Evola points, that despite all fascist pretensions on aristocratic origins, it's rather populist ideology and practice, curiously synthesizing (or exploiting - both is true) socialist aspirations of the urban proletarians with derisory morals of the petty bourgeoisie. Those two insecure XX century social classes certainly have nothing to do with fascist ideology grandiloquence. Their eagerness to espouse any racist ideology is nothing but a compensation for their total lack of any real nobility of these classes.

Julius Evola (1898-1974) an Italian political philosopher saw in fascism an opportunity to revive tradition, or pre-Modern civilizations like that of the Roman Republic, where politics was divorced from economics and parties that vied with each other offering bribes and rewards to electors who would reward the successful bidder with a majority. He viewed the Enlightenment as a misnomer, and argued that deterministic rationalism had repudiated the existential essence of volkgeist Tradition. He saw himself as viewing fascism the right in the context of Italian politics, but in its purist form Fascism was not characterised by opposing interests but was focused on maintaining the spiritual integrity of governing aristocracies. Fascism had promise, but that it had deviated from its ideal. For Evola, Classical Rome provided an ideal where voting rights reflected the contributions individual citizens made to the state, as in the Comitia Centuriata, where numerical strength was countered by the function and dignity of those who were worthy to rule, who were empowered by a phenomenon Friedrich Nietzsche termed the power of distance.The role of the state and its ability to safeguard the integrity of the state are undermined by caesarism, or the ducalism, practised by Mussolini, who Evola feels sacrificed the certainty of a fascist state to the cult of personality and a pretence to believing in egalitarianism, which Evola feels is a strong threat to the stability of modern democracies.Yet following the First World War, Italy's weak and corrupt liberal democratic government and powerless monarchy could find some salvation in the imperfect fascism of Benito Mussolini, who, like Julius Caesar crossing the Rubicon, set up a diarchy, based on a symbolic monarchy combined with a personality cult. Like Caesar, Mussolini exploited veteran discontent to implement a coup d'état in the 1922 March on Rome, prompting King Victor Emmanuel III to invite Mussolini to form a government.Evola, had hoped that Mussolini's "conservative revolution" would not be an end in itself, but would instead lead to the reinstatement of the type of agrarian, feudal systems overthrown by upheavals like the French Revolution or the Italian Risorgimento. For Evola, the state was organic, rather than a product of the nation; in fact, it was the state that gave form to the nation. Mussolini superficially agreed with Evola, asserting that, "The nation does not beget the State . . . . On the contrary, the nation is created by the State, which gives the people . . . the will, and thereby an effective existence." But Mussolini propelled more towards empire and modernism than towards the dignity of the Italian state. It may be that he never trusted Mussolini to realise his ideal fascist state, for he never joined his party. For Evola, even the idea of party politics was anathema, based as it was on the assumption of dissension within the state.

a much more sophisticated philosopher than his epigone, Steve Bannon and although Evola is a Eurocentric traditionalist , he has some cultural background and had a complicated and very uneasy relationship with Mussolini. Could be read co-relatively with Gramsci's The Modern Prince for great insight into the Left-Right axis of our times.The tragedy for those with intellect today is the consistent dumbing down of the thinking of the Twenties and Thirties. Alas, in the age of Trump and Twitter, read, read, read!

Evola is an amazing philosopher and political thinker. In this book he outlines the right wing politucs of italy at the time and compares this to fascism. This book is an excellent read, however Evola starts to split hairs here and there. I wholly revommend this book for anyone interested in fascism.

Excellent book.

This work really needs no recommendation, as Anglophone readers of Evola have likely been eagerly waiting for this to be translated since they first heard of it. He brings his refreshing qualitative and metaphysical understanding of the world to the phenomenon of the fascism. As this seems to be the only book on fascism from a higher perspective, it is also the best and most accurate one. Readers who cannot meditate on certain truths expressed concisely and who require empirically-based historical works replete with names, dates, anecdotes and 'personalities' will not like this.Regarding the edition, however, there are flaws. First, like with many other Arktos books, the footnotes, while sometimes suitable, are more often pedantic. Need a reader be told who Bismarck was, what the Weimar Republic was, or what the 'principles of 1789' were? Such superfluous notes forced the publisher to awkwardly put Evola's own notes up with the main text, and presume a low level of historical knowledge on the part of the reader. While in these times it's not impossible that someone capable of understanding the book could be ignorant of certain basic facts, surely they would look them up elsewhere without space having to be wasted in this book.Second, it is annoying that this was split from its companion volume 'Notes on the Third Reich'. All of the European editions (except the first Italian one, I think) combined them in one book as they should be; 'Fascism' being just over a hundred pages and 'Notes' just under a hundred. The same translator was used and they were apparently translated at about the same time. Why split it up?

I read this book over 20 years ago, and just bought it for my 21 and 19 year-old sons to read. Life changing. Provides tremendous insight into dysfunctional behaviors, co-dependency, etc. I wanted them to read it before they start any serious relationships.

I bought this for an employee who shared with me that they were suffering from extreme depression. I hope she reads it and that it helps.

Hallelujiah! Literally, a few pages after I complained in my review, the actual application/help comes! Yay! Updating to 4 stars!I will update this review as I go along. So far, I am about halfway through this book (page 98) and I still have no major breakthroughs, other than knowing that repressed anger is seen in the majority of depressions. The book mentions 8 personality types, yet only expands on two. The hysterical person and the ocd person. It would have been better if he used less pages on both and instead touched on every type. One thing that irritates me: page 89 states "on the other hand, in some cases when a battered wife comes seeking advice and consolation because her husband beats her up twice a week, we have to wonder if there is a possibility that she has a passive-aggressive personality and may be subconsciously provoking his explosive behavior. (Of course, this does not diminish the husbands responsibility.)"Excuse me? Yes, you are diminishing it. I can't even expand on this further because I think it's disgusting. I understand some women continually go back for the abuse, even when they could get out of the relationship just fine and I also know some women who do enjoy the sympathy they get from telling others, yet do nothing to fix the problem. Like a dog going back to lick up his vomit. However, nothing "okay so" affairs, or abuse. It drives me crazy how we think like that! Again, NOTHING warrants having an affair or abuse! Even if I'm passive aggressive, even if I refuse sex to my husband, if I am never home, am an awful wife, etc. there is no excuse for these things, IN my unprofessional opinion. Sin is sin. Let's call it what it is. One person sinning isn't a pass for me to go and sin because of it.On p.97, it states "Christ desires that we confess our sins, solve our problems, and thus lift our depression." I just want to scream: DUH! How can I solve my problems is the issue, help me with that! Help me with lifting the depression, don't just tell me i need to! I hope to God this dude finally gets to the point and the actual helping part soon. So far, I'm just reading further in hopes that I finally get some help. I'll update more as I continue to read!

I am now depression free after reading and applying the principles in this book.

Excellent information which is put into a usable format that aids the reader in finding the biblical basis for the information and then implementing it in their own life.

A very helpful book to help a person see that happiness is a choice. It has so much information that I couldn't stop reading the book. A friend recommended it to me and I'm so thankful she did.

It was not what I expected. My M.D recommended I purchase and read it. Too much clinical information. May be great for doctors and clinicians but not the actual patient. I was somewhat disappointed.

It changed my attitude for the better.

Very solid stuff, although it's very dry and reads like a commentary. It's always hard for me to pinpoint why some writers are pure pleasure to read, why the style of particular authors draws me to their work, and why the work of others, like Stassen and Gushee, feel more like work. Here, I think the work is worth it, but I wish it was more compelling.The discussions of the Beatitudes in general are particularly interesting, with some useful insights. For instance, regarding the third Beatitude ["Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth," Mt 5:5, NRSV], they cite another author who "says it would be better to translate the word 'tamed' rather than 'meek,' in the sense that their wills have been tamed by God’s will" (40). And on the sixth Beatitude ["Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." Mt. 5:8, NRSV] "So the sixth Beatitude means, in a nutshell, blessed are those who give their whole self over to God, who is the only one worthy of the heart’s devotion." 45A worthwhile commentary on the Beatitudes, the main point is that the Christian's life ought to be completely congruent with Jesus' teachings, in particular, the Sermon on the Mount:"Christian churches across the confessional and theological spectrum, and Christian ethics as an academic discipline that serves the churches, are often guilty of evading Jesus, the cornerstone and center of the Christian faith. Specifically, the teachings and practices of Jesus – especially the largest block of his teachings, the Sermon on the Mount . . . . Jesus taught that the test of our discipleship is whether we act on his teachings, whether we “put into practice” his words. This is what it means to “buil[d our] house on rock (Mt 7:24)." 11I also like the definition of a Christian, as the authors describe it:"A Christian is (or should be) defined as one who humbles himself or herself and chooses to enter into discipleship, to follow Jesus’ path, to build his or her life upon his teachings and his practices even at great cost, to pass those teachings and practices on to others, and thus to enjoy the unspeakable privilege of participating in the advance of God’s reign. Jesus inaugurates the long-promised kingdom and thus offers holistic deliverance to the sick, the poor, the guilty and the rejected; incarnates and demands justice and righteousness; practices and teaches the way of peacemaking; and both experiences and imparts joy. Meanwhile, in his ministry and then through his living Spirit, Jesus offers the very presence of God." 30

This book is very well organized and comprehensive in scope. The point of view is from the evangelical tradition of the church, and the ways it used the Bible and the Sermon on the Mount might have been more plausible with a recognition of the critical historical understanding of the New Testament, but it was written with some openness and deep conviction.

In Kingdom Ethics, Glen Stassen (Fuller Seminary) and David Gushee (McAfee School of Theology) provide a Christian ethic rooted in the idea of the Kingdom of God as defined by Jesus' teaching in the Sermon on the Mount. But this is not a typical treatment of either.Perhaps the most helpful aspect of their Kingdom perspective is the section on the "Transforming Initiatives of the Sermon on the Mount." The authors present the commonly held views of The Sermon on the Mount, but then move to give new meaning to the Sermon and its application through a new look at the construction of each teaching section.The heart of their argument is that Jesus's teaching is a tripartite entity, dealing with the problem, the vicious circle caused by the problem, and the transforming Kingdom initiative which places both the problem and those involved in it, in a new light. An example would be:Traditional Righteousness: Matthew 5:38 -- "You have heard that it was said, `An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.'"Vicious Cycle: Matthew 5:39 -- "But I say to you, do not retaliate vengefully by evil means." (This is the vicious cycle of violence, retaliation, and more violence.)Transforming Initiative: Matthew 5:40-42 -- "But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if any one wants to sue you and take your coat give your cloak as well; and if any one forces you to go one mile, go the second mile. Give to one who begs from you, and do not refuse one who would borrow from you."The authors contend that the entire Sermon on the Mount features this pattern of Jesus presenting the traditional view, the vicious cycle that results, and the alternative way of the Kingdom. Rather than the Sermon being an ideal, but unattainable vision or a spiritualized ethic, the Sermon becomes a practical, yet radically different way for the followers of Jesus to live out Kingdom values.This approach allows a depth of discipleship that previously held views (idealized or spiritualized) of The Sermon deny. One does not have to be perfect to be a follower of Jesus. Following Jesus also can take place in a very real, and gritty world. The individual disciple can apply Jesus teaching in practical, workable ways that will contribute to transforming relationships with people and with God.But this ethic of transformation based on The Sermon does not apply just to interpersonal relationships. Stassen and Gushee find application in the thorny issues of war, peacemaking, capital punishment, abortion, euthanasia, sexuality, gender roles, and biotechnology. Walking, not just a middle way but a transformative way, Kingdom Ethics presents a fresh look at how Christians can apply the teaching of Jesus in ways that are different from either a biblical legalism or a political liberalism. This transformative way often arrives at its application by means of a very different route than previous options.This fresh look at both the Kingdom and its values avoids the hardline approaches of both liberals and fundamentalists, and offers room for dialogue, appreciation, conversation, and peacemaking between the various hard-fought positions. The entire ethic becomes itself a type of peacemaking instrument, grounded in conviction, but recognizing that God's justice and love must both find expression in God's Kingdom as it is lived out.This approach deepens the Christian disciple's relationship to God in several ways. It is an approach which takes seriously the Biblical account, but which also brings the accumulated insights and tools of robust scholarly research to the task of interpretation. The authors accord Scripture a prime place, but interpret the texts in light of the life, teaching, and insights of the Living Word, Jesus Christ. This focus on the Lordship of Christ as the interpretive hermeneutic of Scripture grounds the follower of Christ in the real-life example of Jesus.If you're interested in ethics in light of Jesus' life, this is a book you must have. At almost 500 pages, it's not quick reading (I know because I read it), but will serve as a great ethics resource in any Christian leader's library.

Stassen and Gushee offer a great introductory text to biblical ethics. Using the Sermon on the Mount as a model, they derive a great foundation for which to practice ethics. I found the model on page 59 especially helpful and find myself often returning to it. They help the reader identify criteria to frame ethical thought. They discuss several contemporary issues in light of the Sermon and other biblical contexts then give a fair assessment of both sides and their conclusion. They use Scripture as a primary source and dialogue with other theologians and ethicists on each issue.

Book arrived quickly and in perfect condition as expected. Highlights include and insightful interpretive framework for the Sermon on the Mount and modern moral issues such as just ware fare and environmental ethics.

I purchased both "Wedding Planning for Dummies" and "Wedding Etiquette for Dummies". I am a future mother of the bride. Since I myself had a very simple, non-traditional wedding decades ago, I wanted to be better prepared for my daughter's wedding. I find that the "Wedding Etiquette for Dummies" is NOT just a "manners" book, it wraps the etiquette into the planning itself, and as such is a good resource. No book of this kind can possibly answer all questions and relate to all of the variations in weddings/receptions today, but I find this a handy all-in-one resource with a good overview of all aspects, as well as good detail in many areas. Whatever questions aren't answered in this book I plan on using the many online resources available today to add supplemental detail.

I thought the reading of the book flowed very easily, you didn't really need to look up individual topics from the table of contents. Even though we have a lot of the wedding planning underway, it felt good to see some confirmation of the "work" we had already done. I enjoyed the way it was not bogged down in any one section, but gave "just the right amount of information". I spent a little more than I usually do for an Amazon Book, but I really wanted to read a complete book about wedding etiquette, not just articles on features I was particularly interested in. Would recommend it.

A nice etiquette book for people who are trying to plan their wedding but have no idea how these traditional affiars work. Overall, it was very helpful however, I did not agree with some traditional procedures outlined in the book but I guess that's the great thing about this book, you can take advice or leave it.

Sue Fox has written an exceptional guide for any bride-to-be preparing for her big day. As an etiquette instructor, this book is an excellent guide and reference tool that helps me with instructing my own clientele.Anyone will be able to delve thoroughly into step-by-step chapters or do a quick scan for valuable information that's been carefully listed for fast, on-the-spot reference information.I love that Fox offers ceremony styles for brides of various cultures or religions and explains the "how to traditions" for each.It's a fun and easy read, well organized, with great inside tips and information that can surely save the wedding day or situation. I recommend this book to any participant of the wedding and I will not hesitate to sell this book in my classes and offer them as a free give-away to my students!

Absolutely wonderful book. I've often wondered of the differences and similarities in both the Buddha and Jesus and this is a fabulous book that goes into great detail about both. I love how open Thich Nhat Hanh is in his writing. As someone who has been following the Buddhist path, I found this to be inspirational and an overall enlightening read.

Thich Nhat Hanh is one of the most important spiritual writers today.He continues to explore and show the many many reasons that Christians and Buddhists ( and many other spiritual traditions) can and should work together, study together, and work for social change and justice .. together.I really enjoyed learning Thich Nhat Hanh knew and worked for Peace along side with Jesuit Dan Berrigan as early as 1968.In today's troubled world, he offers a vision of hope... and of a path to follow to seek and promote peace.20 plus years later , and even more timely and compelling.

I was very curious to learn about the comparison in theology and understand different perspectives. I feel my questions were acknowledged and I gained insight. Perhaps some wisdom as well. I have now read several books by this author and enjoyed each one. This was a good one.

I am deeply rooted in my Christian faith. I have also been a fan of Buddha for quite some time. Hanh understands spirituality that surpasses religion and shares that understanding in a very friendly, accessible style.

I have been a life long Christian--wth definite up's and Down's in my faith. Along the way, I have found one of our western society's greatest issues is lack of awareness, inability to sit quietly, running too fast. I believe there is definitely something to learn from this book. I have a hard time reconciling various religions because it does seem there are compelling parts to many. And I do wonder if, as the author said, a mixed fruit salad of religions is OK. But I think we can't underestimate God and the number of ways God appears to us and the avenues he uses! Sometimes I wish the author used more examples and real world connections, but I still liked the book and definitely the message.

Absolutely wonderful book! For those who are open enough to objectively look at the similarity of the teachings of Jesus and the Buddha this is a clearly written masterpiece. I highly recommend it.
